Digital Communication Fundamentals

This document provides an introduction to digital communication, including an overview of the communication process, basic modes of communication, elements of a communication system, examples of communication systems, sources of information like audio, picture, and video data, forms of data compression including lossless and lossy compression, and why digital communication is used, noting that digital hardware is cheap, reliable, and standardized binary interfaces simplify implementation and networking.

Sources of Information
• This can be in multiple dimensions
• One dimension: Speech or Audio Data

• Two dimension: Picture based Data

• Three Dimension: RGB Picture data, Video data
Forms of Data Compression

• Lossless Compression: Operates by removing the redundant information. It is

called lossless because the process is reversible.
• Lossy Compression: Involves loss of information in a controlled manner, the
compressed data cannot be regenerated back to its source.
The basic Picture of Digital
Communication
Why?
• Digital Hardware is cheap, reliable, small
• Standardized binary interface between source and channel
simplifies implementation and understanding
• Source/ decoding and channel coding/ decoding can be done
independent of each other
• A standardized binary interface between source and channel
simplifies networking only binary sequences are send through the
network.
• Shannon’s information theory suggests that if a source can be
transmitted over a channel in any way at all it can be done using a
binary interface between a source and a channel
