API 650 App. P: Tank Shell Loads

This document contains calculations to determine the allowable external loads on openings in a tank shell according to API 650 Appendix P. It provides stiffness coefficients for the opening connections and calculates the unrestrained shell deflection and rotation. It then determines the deflection and rotation due to both product and external loading for three different cases. The results show the radial deflection, longitudinal rotation, and circumferential rotation for each case.

Stiffness Coefficient for Opening Connections (P.4)

{ Reference Figures P-2A through P-2L}

L / 2a = 1.009 ; a/R= 0.0154 ; R/t= 1091.346

Radial {KR / [E * (2a)]} = 1.058E-04 ==> KR = 1.30E+05 lbs/in

3
Longitudinal {KL / [E * (2a) ]} = 1.400E-04 ==> KL = 3.03E+08 in-lbs/radian
3
Circumferential {KC / [E * (2a) ]} = 1.287E-04 ==> KC = 2.78E+08 in-lbs/radian

Unrestrained Shell Deflection and Rotation (P.5)

β = 1.285 / (R*t)

Radial Deflection Due to Product Head,Pressure, and Thermal Expansion (P.5.1)

cos(β*L) - L + α*R*Delta T
2 -β*L
W= 0.036*G*H*R 1-e
E*t H
W= 1.103 in

Rotation Due to Product Head and Pressure (P.5.1)

θ= 1 - βe [cos(β*L) + sin(β∗L)]
2 -β*L
0.036*G*H*R
E*t H

θ= -0.00872 radians

Deflection and Rotation Due to Product and External Loading (P.6)

W R = FR / KR - L*tan(ML / KL) + W
θL = ML / KL - tan [FR / (L*KR)] + θ
-1

θC = MC / KC
