PSY 101- UNDERSTANDING THE SELF

ASSIGNMENT NO. 2
1. KNOW THYSELF
As Socrates said “Every person is dualistic” which means that man is made up of
body and soul. Knowing thyself means examining your inner life, which is your soul, is
more important than knowing the outer life, which is your body. But as we all know, we
spend most of our time knowing our body instead of knowing our soul more.
What we do to know ourselves is we try to understand our personality, our
preferences, our strengths and weaknesses, our emotions and many more.
2. I THINK, THEREFORE I AM
This quote said by the philosopher Descartes can be translated in modern English
as “I am able to think, therefore I exist”. If I am thinking, I must also be existing—if I
stopped thinking, I should at once stopped being.
ACTIVITY NO. 2 (CASE STUDY)
Being stable in life does not mean that you need to settle for marriage. You cannot force
yourself if you are not ready yet.
We can say that Luke, in his mid 30s, has already a stable life. He graduated with a
degree in Computer Engineering, works in a multinational company and earns three times the
salary of his friends. But despite of all his achievements, he still does not want to settle for
marriage. He thinks that he does not have the capacity to be a family man emotionally,
financially and psychologically.
I think Luke does not want to commit his self to anyone yet because in his entire life he
only dedicated his time for himself and his work and he is not yet ready to change his lifestyle.
Other reasons why Luke does not want to settle down yet is maybe because of his past
relationships, or maybe Luke still wants to achieve something for himself despite of being
successful already.
Don’t marry because of peer pressure. Don’t marry because your family or friends wants
to. Don’t marry because you are stable in life. Marry whenever you think you are ready. Marry
when you’ve already achieved everything you wanted in life.
