Reflecting on Eco Human Experience in Teaching

Course reflection

Mia McKenzie

I personally thoroughly enjoyed Eco Human Experience and feel like I will be a much better

educator for completing the course. Through reading stories in Coming of Age and Far From

The Tree I gained new perspectives on the differences in development of children depending on

many factors including geography, socioeconomic status, race, and religion. I just recently

decided to become a teacher, and this was my first education class. Before taking this class,

when I thought of myself as a teacher all I thought about was the math that I would be

teaching; the lessons, homework’s, tests, and grades. Eco Human Experience reminded me that

it’s important to focus on not only what you’re teaching, but who you’re teaching to. I never

thought about having a student with a disability and how I might need to change my teaching

style or lessons to accommodate. As a teacher, I need to be ready to have to accommodate the

absolute best I can for my students. I also know I need to prepare myself for every student to

be different in their learning needs. I would like to be able to help my students develop

healthily and I am willing to work with parents, administrators, parents, and anyone I needed to

be able to positively affect the student’s development. I feel like this class has given me so

many new ideas to work with when it comes to teaching techniques and what I could do for a

student that may need my help. Growing up with disabled family members and having my

mother as a paraeducator has given me insight to how incredibly important it is for a child’s

development for them to be supported, no matter their abilities or conditions. I believe that a

solid support system is essential in child and youth development; they need people who are

going to be there for them every step of the way, who are going to love and support them no

matter the challenges they face, and who are going to go the extra mile to understand what the
child is going through and do their best to meet their needs. A teacher can be a big part of

someone’s support system, especially when they see them every day. I know that personally,

when I was going through a hard time in high school, I saw my teachers more than I saw my

parents and they were able to communicate with my parents about how I was doing and when I

may have been struggling. I am grateful that I had those people in my life and I would love to be

able to do that for someone else. I believe that every teacher should strive for all of their

students to succeed, no matter the struggles they are facing, inside of school or out.
