Pitch, Tone, Volume and Rate Of Speech Can Affect Your Verbal Communications
Communication is nothing but exchange of information through writing, speaking or through some other medium. From the
Assignment 3, I got some basic idea on how pitch, tone, volume and rate of speech affects our verbal communication.
Pitch: Pitch is the frequency we use while speaking, and varying pitch tells many a thing about our preparation and our
characteristics. Often, high pitch expresses nervousness and for that reason, we need to vary our pitch, to make people
understand what we are trying to convey. We need to vary our pitch, so that the speech doesn’t become a monotonous,
where people lose interest of listening.
Tone: We need to take care of the tone we are talking in. Getting the right tone is very much necessary, otherwise, what we
want to convey often gets misunderstood. Better the tone, better the negotiation will be and with the understanding tone,
people tends to listen us more attentively and correct attitude is transmitted.
Volume: Volume is that quality in our speech which is kind of make or break. High volume is often misunderstood as shouting
and low volume is understood as inaudible or often nervous. Having a medium volume is recommended, but there are
exceptions like in a big hall, the volume should be moderated, so that people at the back can listen. The volume should be
like which can make people comfortable, and when people become comfortable then only, they tend to listen to the speech.
Rate of Speech: Rate of speech is an important criterion to be kept in mind while delivering a speech. During a slow rate,
people tends to lose interest even if the content is interesting. And too fast rate often makes people unheard. People
listening has a specific capacity to listen to, so the speech is to be delivered at a moderate speed, so that people clings to the
speech and doesn’t lose interest.
