Impact of Martial Law in the Philippines

Martial law in the Philippines was a dark era where large portions of the population experienced violence, killings, torture and widespread human rights violations at the hands of the military and government officials for over 10 years under the fascist dictator Ferdinand Marcos. This issue remains relevant as it cost the people so dearly in terms of lives lost and freedoms taken away, and because the country is still paying for the aftermath today, while those responsible have not acknowledged their crimes.

DISCUSSION BOARD UNIT 1

A large portion of us recalls Martial Law as agonizing unrest that the country actually
experienced. A public circumstance related with all types of viciousness from killings,
authorized vanishings, lifting of the writ of habeas corpus, huge common freedoms
infringement, and grave maltreatments of military and government officials against the
individuals' respectful freedoms and majority rule rights. Other than these, who might
neglect to relate the previous fascist dictator, Ferdinand Marcos, with Martial Law. It was
10 years of enduring political circumstance influencing all parts of the nation's social
framework.

This particular issue is still relevant because it has taken away so much from us that we
fail to remember and feel as a people that we owe the freedom we are enjoying today to
those who have fallen during that dark era. Furthermore, we should always remember
what was taken in the 13 years of Martial Law we are as yet paying today and the
people behind this refused to acknowledge their crimes.
