Conductivity Testing Method for Aqueous Systems

This document provides a test method for determining the conductivity of aqueous systems that do not contain harmful materials like fluorides. It outlines the necessary apparatus, chemicals, and 4-step procedure to measure conductivity. The method involves calibrating the conductometer using a potassium chloride solution, rinsing the electrode in the sample solution, measuring its conductivity at 25°C, and reporting the results to 1 μS/cm along with any relevant operating details.

DETERMINATION OF CONDUCTIVITY

QUAKER INDIA Test Method: ZI 005 (01/04)

This Test Method replaces QITM :ZI 005(98/01)

1. Scope
1.1 This method is applicable for the determination of
conductivity values in aqueous systems which do not
contain materials harmful to glass, such as fluorides.

2. Apparatus

2.1 Conductometer - accurate to 1 µS/cm or better.

2.2 Conductivity Electrode
2.3 Glass beaker - 150 ml
2.4 Stirrer - Magnetic or glass rod.
2.5 Water bath - Capable of maintaining a temperature of
25°C, independent of the ambient temperature.

3. Chemicals
3.1 Water - Distilled or demineralized

3.2 Potassium chloride solution (0.01 M)- Dissolve 745

milligram potassium chloride(AR/GR) in distilled or
demineralized water and dilute to 1 liter.

4. Procedure
4.1 Place a glass beaker of 150 ml containing 0.01 M
potassium chloride (KCl) solution and a glass beaker
containing the sample under test, in a water bath,
maintained at 25°C.
4.2 Pre-rinse the electrode with some 0.01M KCl solution,
using another glass beaker.
4.3 Immerse the electrode in the 0.01M KCl solution,
maintained at 25°C.
4.4 Adjust the scale reading to 1413µS/cm, according to the
manufactures instructions.
4.5 Rinse the electrode with water several times.
4.6 Rinse the electrode with a portion of the sample under
test several times.
4.7 Immerse the electrode in the sample under test,
maintained at 25°C.
4.8 Allow the scale reading to stabilise and read the
conductivity, accurate to 1 µS/cm.
4.9 Thoroughly clean the electrode with water and store it in
water.
If necessary, AR grade acetone can be used to remove
tenacious residues from emulsion samples, provided that
the final rinse is water.

5. Report

5.1 Report the conductivity accurate to 1 µs/cm.

5.2 The report must also contain any operating details, which
are not covered in this method and which may influence
the results of this test.
