Career Summary

Xero Pty Ltd, Rudd Street, Canberra Australia Jun 2017 to Present
Principal Engineer

Xero develops a cloud-based accounting software platform for small and medium-sized businesses. As

principal engineer I became a floating resource to assist and mentor other teams during critical phases
of various projects. Some of the projects worked on included Payroll Superannuation (SuperChoice
Integration), Single Touch Payroll, Direct Payments (NAB Integration), Payroll Optimization (prior to
sharding), Payroll Database Sharding project and more.

Notable Achievement: Guided, mentored and provided direction to the platform team during a very
complex live database sharding project with zero downtime.

 The payroll eco system is made up of a core payroll application surrounded by many other
smaller systems and microservices. Many technologies are utilized including: Microsoft SQL
Server, PostgreSQL, DynamoDB, C# .Net & .Net Core, StructureMap, Dapper,
NHibernate, AWS Step Functions, AWS Lambdas, AWS EC2, AWS ECS, Knockout,
ReactJS, [Link], Event Store, AWS SQS, AWS SNS, PowerShell, GitHub Enterprise,
New Relic, Kubernetes, Docker, TC Kotlin.
 As principal engineer I was responsible for technical design, implementation, test designs,
support and providing guidance to other engineers on various applications.
 Spearheaded the first Community of Practice for Canberra where engineers could learn from the
success others gone before us, discuss best practices and ways to solve our monolithic
architecture. I used this group to spearhead the minor release process from a ‘big bang’ two
weekly major release to a daily minor release process.
 Another notable achievement during my time here was analysing and implementing
performance improvements when approaching end of calendar year (prior to database sharding
project). Without these changes we calculated that the database would have crashed due to
number of concurrent users.

Schneider Electric SE, Eagle Farm, QLD, Australia July 2014 to Jun 2017
Senior Software Developer

Schneider develops a major MES (Manufacturing Execution System) for the Mining Industry that can
provide users with deep track, trace and genealogy for following the manufacturing process from raw
materials through finished goods. The system can gather material consumption, labor used, and asset
utilization and quality test results to ensure that any deviations are captured at each step of the
transformation process.

Notable Achievement: A major contribution to the evolution of ideas and the implementation of a
complete in-memory processing on supply chain data to achieve peak performance on Schneider’s MES
application; a performance critical middleware application used in the Mining industry.

 As you would expect from such a large application many technologies were utilized including:
Microsoft SQL Server, C# .Net 4.6, autofac, [Link], NUnit, Moq, Reactive
Extensions, Polly, TxCache, Serilog, Seq Server
 Tasked with re-engineering the client-server middleware application Ampla to add features and
improve performance.
 As part of the re-engineering we utilized the following approaches to software development:
Domain Driven Design, Event Sourcing, CQRS, Test Driven Development, Strict Code
Quality Peer Reviews, Pair Programming, SOLID principles
 To ensure SOLID code all classes had their dependencies registered with an IOC container
(autofac) and injected through constructor injection

customer issues and various other applications.
 Responsible for data analysis included call data manipulation, diagnostics and the cleansing of
raw voice data.
 Development of a number of different WCF (.Net 4.5) & Web API 2 applications for
connecting different internal applications including auto-provisioning of web hosting and
exchange containers.
 Interfacing with ECN technicians on system improvements and GUI design within the internal
systems (including converting all legacy Prototype library functionality to JQuery).
 Project management of future projects including time estimation and structure of work.
 One of the first projects in this position was the migration of a legacy system (linux command
line + PostgreSQL(un-normalized)) across to a new data structure to replicate and improve on
the functionality from the legacy system.

Dell (Application Services), Limerick, Ireland October 2008 to May 2010

.NET/SQL Developer

Dell Application Services (formerly Perot Systems) is a branch of Dell with about 50 Java and .Net
developers in Limerick City. Dell Application Services builds broad capabilities around enterprise
applications such as SAP®, Oracle® and Microsoft® Dynamics, in addition to cloud migration,
application modernization and custom application development. I was part of different .Net Developer
teams working on various projects.

Notable Achievement: I was solely responsible for the development of an online booking system that
allowed members (greyhound trainers) to book greyhound tracks throughout the entire country online.
This improved efficiency and prevented double bookings as members were given a visual
representation of available slots.

Project: IGB
 A major semi state body responsible for the promotion and regulation of greyhound racing in
Ireland.
 One major role in this position was to migrate a Legacy VB6 and MySQL application to use a
Service Oriented Architecture (C#.Net 3.5) and SQL Server.
 I was responsible for development on the RMS Race Management System
([Link]/Javascript/T-SQL/Episerver) and the client’s public facing website with portal
login [Link] both had a SQL Server back end.
 I was involved in the full life cycle of a number of significant projects including an online
booking system for Greyhound Trainers for online bookings of trials.
 Cost estimation, proof of concept analysis and scope for software development.
 Major tasks included designing, coding and developer testing at all levels of both applications.
 Improved the payment algorithms within RMS from processing of payments to remittance
documents sent to the payee and crosschecked with files sent to the bank, utilizing SQL Server
Reporting Services and CLR Stored Procedures.
 Responsible for design, implementation and test of new advertising features on the client’s
public facing website, utilizing HTML embedded media players and 3rd party [Link] Controls.
 Responsible for software builds to all LIVE environments.

Project: BSF
 The British Government's capital investment programme to help transform every secondary
school in England, a large quantity of this investment will be used for Virtual Learning
Environments (VLE’s) to be developed in SharePoint 2010.
 I started early in the project life cycle and was responsible for carrying out technical proof of
concept analysis on SharePoint 2010 and other tools against requirements submitted by the
client.
 As part of the analysis team I developed SharePoint Web Parts (XAML/C#) for prototyping
and proof of concept.
 Developed C# class libraries for Active Directory, OpenXML 2.0 and SharePoint 2010.

 Developed Use cases and UML Models as part of the analysis.

EMPOSME Project, ManOpt Systems Ltd, Limerick, Ireland August 2006 to October 2008
.NET/SQL Developer

ManOpt Systems is a small technology company that specializes in developing Manufacturing

Optimization Software. I was part of a small team of .Net developers and Academics that focused on
converting academic enterprise manufacturing principles into a software product.

Notable Achievement: Development on this project was so successful that the funding was approved
for phase 2 offering another €2million. The biggest selling point of the software came from an area
where I was heavily involved which was the real-time execution of a visual workflow across the various
phases of a manufacturing process. I wrote the queuing system that drove the object from location to
location on the manufacturing shop floor.

 .NET/SQL Analyst/Programmer for a €2.5million EU funded EMPOSME Enterprise Management

and Performance Optimization project.
 I started early in the project life cycle and worked very closely with the software architect to
develop object orientated modules for the EMPOSME Tool.
 The WinForms Application consisted of over 500 C# classes, over 500 SQL stored
procedures and some tables with over a million records.
 Designed User Interfaces on paper and consulted with development manager on designs.
 Developed the User Interfaces using C#.Net API’s and Infragistics for .Net API’s.
 Coded with recognised design patters to maximize code reuse.
 Coded the Business Logic using Object Oriented practices for manipulating data and passing
objects between the presentation layer and the data access layer
 Coded using reflection, as the system was highly decoupled
 Carried out code reviews and trained new developers on the architecture of the system
 Other tasks included creating and deleting databases, restoring and backup of databases,
creating and deleting tables and stored procedures, managing revision control, comparing
databases, generating scripts for the initial application installation.
 Involved in building the internal management apps using [Link] and Infragistics Web
Controls.
