CHAPTER I
THE PROBLEM AND ITS BACKGROUND
INTRODUCTION
Reading is a magic key to the world of enlightenment and
enjoyment. It is a basic tool for learning all subject areas. It helps
stimulate brain activities that result to having minimal cognitive
difficulties.
Reading without comprehension is not reading at all. It does not
only require recognizing of words or sentences but also understanding
it. Reading comprehension is what allows the readers to interact with
the text in a meaningful way. It is a link for efficient reading. Efficient
reading is an active dialogue between the author and the reader. An
efficient reader is the one who is ready to evaluate, challenge and
criticize reading materials. The man who reads well is the man who
leads.
Students are expected to learn to read during elementary and
enhance their reading on secondary level. Teachers offer many
strategies in developing reading skills. Oral reading is a powerful tool

that can help students not only learn to read but also to experience the
joy of reading.
Many of the students can read orally but not all of them
understand what they have read. Eventually, teachers cannot just tell
what was the cause of the poor comprehension of their students.
However, they try their best to provide their pupils with ample
opportunities in order to read with better comprehension.
It was in this promise that the researchers conducted this study to
determine the oral reading comprehension skills of the students and the
ways and means of the teachers to enhance it.
Conceptual Framework
This study was based on the concept proposed by Romeo and
Romero (1998) that reading is a process of communication between the
author and the reader. It is a combination of being able to recognize and
analyze words almost instantly and to understand what the words mean
when they are string together in a sentence, a paragraph or a longer
passage. In short, it is understanding what the author has written.

varied teaching approaches and strategies in classroom instruction to
enable the students to read with understanding and comprehension.
Despite all the efforts done by the teachers still it cannot be avoided that
school continues to produce slow and even non- readers. It is therefore,
the responsibility of the reading teachers to enhance the oral reading
comprehension skills of their pupils.
Impressed by the foregoing concepts, the researchers were
guided in constructing the paradigm of the study shown in figure 1.

Assumption of the Study
The following assumptions were formulated
1. Teachers will be very honest and sincere in answering the
questionnaire.
2. The people concerned will be benefited from the study.
Scope and Delimitation of the Study
This study limits itself in assessing the ways and means applied by
the teachers in enhancing the Oral Reading Comprehension Skills of
selected Grade 7 students in Taal National High School during school
year 2014- 2015. The researchers involved of
Significance of the Study
The new trend in classroom instruction is meeting the individual
student needs so as to develop his potentials in Oral Reading
Comprehension. The findings of this research will indicate how the Oral
Reading Comprehension Skills of the students can be responsive to their
learning needs. The result of this study could benefit the following
persons:

To the reading teachers, the result of this study will give them
insights into the extent of improvements they have to make on the
reading strategies they employ. Teachers would be enlightened on their
students Oral Reading Comprehension Skills, if which needs remedial,
reinforcement and enrichment.
To the administration and supervisors, the findings would reveal
the need of teaching strategies used by the teachers and improvement
of school facilities. Hence, they could provide the needed guidance and
assistance in observing them.
To the students, the result of this study will provide them with
basic skills needed in the development of their Oral Reading
Comprehension Skills. This may help them to overcome their
weaknesses by means of suggested ways of enhancing their Oral
Reading Comprehension Skills. They could be developed into efficient
readers with good Oral Reading Comprehension Skills.
