Negotiation Strategies for Success

The document summarizes a negotiation exercise where the student negotiated to lower the price of a pair of shoes from 600 to 450. The student used several communication strategies effectively during the negotiation including preparing and planning, practicing communication competence, asking open-ended questions to listen carefully, maintaining a positive relationship, and being patient. The student learned that effective negotiation requires understanding the other party's perspective, asking for more than actually wanted to leave room for compromise, and negotiating fairly without offending the other side. Negotiation is a skill that can be learned to produce mutually agreeable outcomes.

Online Barter: Service: Negotiated Price: 450

1. Briefly explain how you were able to negotiate the price:

What I did to negotiate the price is that first I make sure that the seller's perspective can align with mine and I check how
much I want that product for me to negotiate with the seller. Third I never make the first offer and avoid accepting the
first offer of the seller. What I usually do is to listen more and talk less because that gives me a chance to think about
what to say effectively.

2. What communication Strategies (based on the discussions from unit 3 & 4) did you use in
negotiating/transacting?

Strategies (at least five) Brief description of how you used that strategy
Going into a negotiation unprepared is setting ourselves after the fire.
So before I approach the seller I think about the scope of the
1. Prepare and plan
agreement I want and taking up the perspective of the seller I will talk
to if I can align his incentives with my own.
Here I maintain a positive relationship knowing which behaviors are
2. Practice communication competence appropriate for the various situation so that I can perform the
behavior effectively.
Using those open questions, I make sure that I still maintain the

the seller to think and dive into the agreement.
In this strategy for me, to achieve a good outcome then I have to align
4. Maintain personal integrity and solid my thought with actions and stick to the agreement so that there will
relationship be consistency in both sides and can also maintain a solid relationship
between us.
Having negotiation with someone is a process for us to achieve what
we want to be it is. So I always keep in mind that instead of having
quick to say which I have to say, I listen carefully and I focus on what
5. Be patient he said because when I listen, I can hear what he say and I could
respond to what he said instead of thinking what will happen next.
Therefore when I patiently listening, I could also think and answer him
genuinely.

3. Write a short narrative of what you have learned from the experience

Many people think negotiation skills are some innate talent, but it’s not true. For me, negotiate is a skill that I believe
anyone can learn. What I have learned from negotiating is that first, we must take the perspective of the person we are
talking to if we can align his/her incentives with our own. Second, in negotiating we always ask for more than we want
because it gives us the opportunity that the willing seller sacrifices while we are negotiating. Lastly, we can do it
without offending the seller because it is our leverage practical psychology from the art of negotiation. Therefore
negotiating is a process that produces a fair outcome for both sides.
