This programme promotes: integral, professional, social and human development of students of the
Catholic University of Colombia, likewise general population, making of learning English "a skill that
empowers individuals, gives them greater opportunities to access to knowledge, other cultures and makes
them more competitive.
MAIN OBJECTIVES:
To provide our students with a dynamic methodology, based on meaningful activities and tasks, in
order to achieve the development of academic, professional and social skills and competences, key
for students’ learning process.
To offer strategies and support to university students, which allow them to successfully develop
academic activities related to the target language, and to promote study habits focused on the
development of critical thinking.
To spread the importance of English as a foreign language from a professional perspective and
preparing students to face modern world demands, in relation to a foreign language command.
To train students in social skills use, in order to explore other cultures, interacting appropriately when
abroad. Our students will broaden their worldview while practicing values such as tolerance, flexibility,
respect, responsibility and others needed in order to successfully perform in a global world.
SPECIFIC OBJECTIVES:
The student will be able to briefly explain and justify his/her opinions and projects; he/she will also be
able to link phrases in order to describe experiences, facts, dreams and ambitions.
The student will be able to perform in traveling situations where English is spoken and participate
spontaneously in a conversation that deals with everyday issues of personal interest or of daily life.
The student will be able to understand texts written in a language of habitual use related to work and
the description of events, feelings and desires in personal letters.
The student will be able to grasp the main ideas of a clear and everyday speech and the main idea of
radio or television programmes that deal with current issues and personal and professional interest.
The student will be able to write simple and well-linked texts about familiar topics and personal letters
that describe experiences and impressions.
The student may interact spontaneously in a debate or in a conversation about everyday topics and
of general interest, expressing his/her opinions and impressions.
The student will be able to capture more detailed information about an article, debate or
conversation; and likewise take position justifying his/her points of view.
The student will be able to exchange information about a specific topic, he/she will also be able to
give and receive detailed instructions on everyday topics or those of his/her specialty.
The student will be able to tell a story or tale, the plot of a book or movie and equally take a position
expressing his/her arguments coherently orally and in writing.
The student will be able to interact in professional situations and talk about his/her academic and
professional achievements.

The student will be familiar with the culture of different English-speaking countries and with aspects
such as body language, values and beliefs reflected in the language.
The student will prepare and make an academic presentation.
METHODOLOGY
The programme’s methodology is based on the development of specific guided tasks and projects, by
means of dynamic lessons whereby students are at the centre of the learning process and our teachers
being facilitators who will lead the students towards the achievement of the proposed goals.
GUIDED TASKS
These will be held in every session and will allow students to apply their acquired knowledge of the
language and develop a communicative and cooperative work with their classmates in order to reach a
goal. Such tasks are related to daily topics and focused on the contact with other cultures.
EXCUSE FOR RESCHEDULING
For all the purposes of grades, attendance, students’ rights and duties, the disciplinary regime students
are subject to and any other academic or administrative issues, everything established in the 236
Agreement of June 24th 2016 will be applied (available on the website of the University).
Students who do not attend any scheduled evaluation activity for reasons of force majeure, shall present
at the Institute of Languages, within five (5) business days after the absence, the excuse and the request
for rescheduling activities. After these five days no other requests will be accepted . If the request is
approved, the Direction will proceed to authorize the reprogramming of the relevant activity (Article 39).
Sick leaves can just be accepted if they’re certified by the Medical Service of the University. Excuses
related to personal inconveniences, sport activities representing the University or academic events can be
accepted by the Director of the Institute only if the student hasn’t missed more than 20% of classes
(Article 46).
In the case of re-scheduled final socializations and final exams, it will have the cost established by the
administrative organs of the University (Article 39).
Re-scheduled socializations must be taken out of class. When carrying out this activity, the teacher must
be accompanied by a jury equally qualified as him/her. The grade of that activity must be given to the
student once the evaluation is over (Article 47).
PASSING SCORE
The passing grade for a course at the Institute of Languages is six point zero (6.0) or higher within a range
of zero (0) to ten (10). Failure to achieve this score, the course is not approved. If a student doesn’t pass
the course, he won’t have a second chance examination and he must re-enroll in the same level again in
the next course (Article 44).
COURSE FAILING OUT OF ABSENCES
The Language Institute courses are failed when missing 20% of the hours stipulated in the course,
whatever the cause. Delays of one hour also affect the percentage of attendance. This situation will imply
for the student failing the course and the final grade will be the one the student had obtained until the date

he completed 20% of missed class hours. After that date, the student cannot submit more academic
activities or take any exams or socializations but s/he can keep coming to class (Article 46).
UNITS AND ACADEMIC TERMS:
Study units will be divided into three academic terms. Each of these terms will complete the final grade of
the level. Such levels will be distributed as follows:
FIRST TERM

1 -To describe healthy/unhealthy lifestyles using frequency adverbs.
-To talk about their current life using present continuous. Aug 10th - Aug19th
-To ask and talk about illness and look for and give advice.
2 - To talk about their preferences about sports.
- To describe rules of competitions by using modal verbs.
Aug 20th – Aug 27th
- To ask and talk about their interests and to recommend and encourage
fun activities.
3 - To make comparisons about different modes of transport using
comparatives/superlatives and as...as.
Aug 27th – Sep 3rd
- To report about how people travel around town.
- To discuss about the pros and cons of different ways of transport.
4 - To ask and talk about their past.
- To describe personal qualities needed for certain jobs.
Sept 7th – Sept 10th
- To tell a story by contextualizing it with past continuous and using time
expressions to organize it chronologically.

PROJECTS: Projects are a tangible product to be socialised and evaluated. In this, students will show
their progress and proficiency in the target language in a creative and meaningful way. These projects are
the result of tasks and the guidance from teachers. The project settled for the INDEPENDENT I is named:
The World in Motion (Innovation): Students will research about the role of technology in
different aspects of their life and the world around them. They will discuss how relevant is the
impact on their personal or professional interests. They will prepare an entry describing how
technology influences and shapes people’s life styles.
CLASSWORK: In addition to examinations, assignments and projects, students will be assessed on their
performance inside the classroom according to their use of English in aspects such as: participation,
individual work, applying learning strategies and group work (with the teacher and peers).
MATERIAL: The book Life Pre-Intermediate by John Hughes, Helen Stephenson and Paul Dummet of
CENGAGE LEARNING (Publishing house) will be used for this level. Students will get the student's book
and a personal code that will give them access to the “[Link]” platform. This platform will
provide them with the online workbook and a variety of different resources for additional practice.
