Rationale

Children benefit from service learning because it enriches student


growth and enhances the common good. It forces the students
that participate into a deeper understanding of the topics and
gives them the opportunity for real-life application which requires
higher levels of thinking. At a young age, service learning can help
students begin a habit of putting others’ needs before their own,
which improves their moral development and helps them to find
their personal identity. I completed a Service Learning Project in
my first-grade classroom that encouraged my students to learn
about the roles of community helpers and show their appreciation
of staff at our school that help keep students safe and healthy.
Together we read a Scholastic Magazine that covered the topic of
Community Helpers. Then, we discussed the duties of our
secretaries, custodians, and cafeteria workers at our school. The
students recorded videos and created thank you cards to show
their appreciation for those staff members they normally do not
interact with. From this project I supported intellectual, social,
career, and personal development of the students. Our students
gained more knowledge about the world around them and
learned about possible career options. They developed their
abilities to express gratitude to others and communicate in both
written and oral forms. Through this service learning project,
students were able to share their own creativity and
thoughtfulness and develop as individuals.
