As a result of this lesson students will know… and be able to do…
Learning Objectives:
Academic:
Be able to differentiate between speed, velocity and acceleration
o Establish patterns between the three in coordination with distance
Ability to analyze motion graphs and determine what property is being portrayed
Know, understand, and be able to apply Newton’s Laws of Motion
o Apply the law to develop an understanding of balanced vs unbalanced forces
Understand the concept of inertia

Non-Academic:
Develop an understanding of difficult and complex concepts then use that understanding for application
to further topics
Propose relevant and informed questions about interesting topics
Establish a route for answering difficult questions before asking others for assistance
Ability to collaborate on simple and difficult classroom activities
Support for Academic Language

(Energy and Mass), Kinetic Energy, Potential Energy, Transformation, System, Molecular Motion, Speed,
Acceleration, Velocity, Newton’s Laws of Motion, Forces, Inertia, Distance, Vectors, Newton’s Laws of Motion,
Balanced Forces, Unbalanced Forces, Proportional
Language Demands and Supports- The lesson will require the students to read, write, and explain/justify the
theories and principles they learn about in the lesson
Assessment
Assessment Strategies in this lesson:
Assessments: Inquiry Components
The students will get into groups of four – five and have one white board in the group. The teacher will (Use The 5 E instructional model labels.)
ask questions and have the groups compete for the right answers
o Questions will require multiple different types of answers including
drawings/words/formulas/interpretations
There will be a writing/drawing/fill in the blank frame for the students to complete about the topic
including analysis of figures, summaries of topics and laws, balancing of forces, outcomes of systems
o This will be used as a significant study resource for the students in preparation for the exam

Following the introduction: Elaborate, Evaluate if appropriate)
There will be a writing/drawing/fill in the blank frame for the students to complete about the topic
including analysis of figures, summaries of topics and laws, balancing of forces, outcomes of systems
o This will be used as a significant study resource for the students in preparation for the exam
o Students will be asked to work on this independently for 5 minutes, in groups for 5 minutes,
then using any outside resources for the remaining time (20 minutes)
There will be a short worksheet with images of systems on it and the students will be asked to determine
the outcomes of the systems. The worksheet will also include graphical representations of the
relationship between speed, distance, velocity, and acceleration
o Another valuable study tool
Closure/Summarizing/Wrap up: Explain, Evaluate
The teacher will again allow for 5 more minutes of any questions about the subject or lesson that
students missed or would like to look into
Modifications/Differentiation:
Students who require extra attention will have ample time to ask questions during this lesson
Students who progress quickly will be told to begin review for the final and to go over previous
assignments/notes
