Modal Analysis - Ground Acceleration
Original Coupled Matrix Equations (n x n) in cartesian coordinates u:
[M ]{u&&}+ [C ]{u&}+ [K ]{u} = −[M ]{1}u&&g
[Φ ]T [M ][Φ ]{q&&}+ [Φ ]T [C ][Φ ]{q&}+ [Φ ]T [K ][Φ ]{q} = −[Φ ]T [M ]{1}u&&g
Transform to n Uncoupled Equations in generalized coordinates q:
q&&i + 2hiωi q&i + ωi qi =

Standard solutions of SDOF Systems
The n-SDOF uncoupled eqns in generalized coordinates can
be solved using standard solutions for SDOF system in closed
form or numerically. Simply replace u(t) to q(t)
Example:
A and B can be solved by
Substituting initial conditions
In generalized coordinates
Direct Integration of SDOF Eqn of Motion
m( &x&) + cx + kx = F (t )
xi , x&i , &x&i - displ., vel., & acc. at time t i
xi +1 , x&i +1 , &x&i +1 - displ., vel., & acc. at time t i +1
Fn is the applied force at time tn
F(t)
Fn Fn+1
Let ∆t = time interval
tn = n ∆t
0 1 ……
∆t tn tn+1

Time History Analysis by Direct Integrattion
There is no need to uncouple the equations.
Direct numerical integration is applied to the couple
