Combating Fake News on Social Media

As a student, to avoid spreading inaccurate information on social media, the author would encourage fact checking information from reliable sources rather than believing rumors, as not everything in media is true. Governments should promote media literacy and journalism to build trust and counter fake news. The news industry must also provide high-quality reporting to correct false information without amplifying it.

BSN-2 STS Reflection April 7, 2020

Question:
Social Media also poses certain risks especially in the dissemination of false
information. As a student, how will you use social media to ensure that you do not
propagate inaccurate and unreliable information?

Reflection:

Spreading fake news online is not a decent or mature way to act. It gives false
information which can cause the society to believe something that it’s not true. In fact,
seeing someone else getting bullied makes other people feel bad. Fake news is like
meanness pollution, it affects everyone in the environment and acting like this shows a
lack of courage. Fake news and sophisticated disinformation campaigns are especially
problematic in democratic systems, and there is growing debate on how to address
these issues without undermining the benefits of digital media. In order to maintain an
open, democratic system, it is important that government, business, and consumers
work together to solve these problems. As a student, to ensure the avoidance of fake
news especially in social media I would encourage everyone to look for the right
resources of information and not to believe right away with the rumors in the media
because not everything in the media is true and mostly it is a baseless facts also,
Governments should promote news literacy and strong professional journalism in their
societies. The news industry must provide high-quality journalism in order to build public
trust and correct fake news and disinformation without legitimizing them.
