Stories for Young Readers

The poem describes a spider spinning a web on a fence post near a farm. As the spider works, various farm animals try to engage it in their activities, but the spider does not respond and remains focused on spinning its web. Once the web is finished, a fly gets caught in it, showing the purpose of the spider's work.

Well Done!

By Richard Morgan

I can dress to play outside…

All by myself…
Well done!
I can ride my bike to go and hide…
All by myself…
Well done!
I can wash my face in time for tea…
All by myself…
Well done!
I can scoop up peas on a spoon for me…
All by myself…
Well done!
I can hold on, so I don‟t miss…
All by myself…
Well done!
I can hug and I can kiss,
but I need YOU to do this!
I like to try and do things all by myself.
Sometimes, though, I get things a little wrong.
Now and then, I get things a lot wrong… but by trying, I grow a lot and this
makes my mummy and daddy very happy.
And then I can do even more things
ALL BY MYSELF!
Charlie
Little Red Riding Hood

Little Red Riding Hood lived in a wood with her mother. One day Little Red
Riding Hood went to visit her granny. She had a nice cake in her basket. On
her way Little Red Riding Hood met a wolf. “Hello!” said the wolf. “Where
are you going?”
“I‟m going to see my grandmother. She lives in a house behind those trees.”
The wolf ran to Granny‟s house and ate Granny up. He got into Granny‟s bed.
A little later, Little Red Riding Hood reached the house. She looked at the
wolf. “Granny, what big eyes you have!”
“All the better to see you with!” said the wolf. “Granny, what big ears you
have!”
“All the better to hear you with!” said the wolf. “Granny, what a big nose you
have!”
“All the better to smell you with!” said the wolf. “Granny, what big teeth you
have!”
“All the better to eat you with!” shouted the wolf. A woodcutter was in the
wood. He heard a loud scream and ran to the house. The woodcutter hit the
wolf over the head. The wolf opened his mouth wide and shouted and Granny
jumped out. The wolf ran away and Little Red Riding Hood never saw the
wolf again.
Jack and the beanstalk Story

Once upon a time there was a boy called Jack. He lived with his mother. They
were very poor. All they had was a cow. One morning, Jack‟s mother told
Jack to take their cow to market and sell her. On the way, Jack met a man. He
gave Jack some magic beans for the cow. Jack took the beans and went back
home. When Jack‟s mother saw the beans she was very angry. She threw the
beans out of the window. The next morning, Jack looked out of the window.
There was a giant beanstalk. He went outside and started to climb the
beanstalk. He climbed up to the sky through the clouds. Jack saw a beautiful
castle. He went inside. Jack heard a voice. “Fee, Fi, Fo, Fum!” Jack ran into a
cupboard. An enormous giant came into the room and sat down. On the table
there was a hen and a golden harp. “Lay!” said the giant. The hen laid an egg.
It was made of gold. “Sing!” said the giant. The harp began to sing. Soon the
giant was asleep. Jack jumped out of the cupboard. He took the hen and the
harp. Suddenly, the harp sang, “Help, master!” The giant woke up and
shouted, “Fee, Fi, Fo, Fum!” Jack ran and started climbing down the
beanstalk. The giant came down after him. Jack shouted, “Mother, help!”
Jack‟s mother took an axe and chopped down the beanstalk. The giant fell and
crashed to the ground. Nobody ever saw him again. With the golden eggs and
the magic harp, Jack and his mother lived happily ever after.
There was an Old Lady

There was an old lady who swallowed a fly

I don't know why she swallowed a fly - perhaps she'll die!
There was an old lady who swallowed a spider,
That wriggled and wiggled and tiggled inside her;
She swallowed the spider to catch the fly;
I don't know why she swallowed a fly - Perhaps she'll die!
There was an old lady who swallowed a bird;
How absurd to swallow a bird.
She swallowed the bird to catch the spider,
She swallowed the spider to catch the fly;
I don't know why she swallowed a fly - Perhaps she'll die!
There was an old lady who swallowed a cat;
Fancy that to swallow a cat!
She swallowed the cat to catch the bird,
She swallowed the bird to catch the spider,
She swallowed the spider to catch the fly;
I don't know why she swallowed a fly - Perhaps she'll die!
There was an old lady that swallowed a dog;
What a hog, to swallow a dog;
She swallowed the dog to catch the cat,
She swallowed the cat to catch the bird,
She swallowed the bird to catch the spider,
She swallowed the spider to catch the fly;
I don't know why she swallowed a fly - Perhaps she'll die!
There was an old lady who swallowed a cow,
I don't know how she swallowed a cow;
She swallowed the cow to catch the dog,
She swallowed the dog to catch the cat,
She swallowed the cat to catch the bird,
She swallowed the bird to catch the spider,
She swallowed the spider to catch the fly;
I don't know why she swallowed a fly - Perhaps she'll die!
There was an old lady who swallowed a horse... She's dead, of course!
The very hungry Caterpillar
By Eric Carle

In the light of the moon a little egg lay on a leaf. One Sunday morning the
warm sun came up and pop! Out of the egg came a tiny and very hungry
caterpillar.
He started to look for some food.
On Monday he ate through one apple. But he was still hungry.
On Tuesday he ate through two pears, but he was still hungry.
On Wednesday he ate through three plums, but he was still hungry.
On Thursday he ate through four strawberries, but he was still hungry.
On Friday he ate through five oranges, but he was still hungry.
On Saturday he ate through one piece of chocolate cake, one ice-cream cone,
one pickle, one slice of Swiss cheese, one slice of salami, one lollipop, one
piece of cherry pie, one sausage, one cupcake, and one slice of watermelon.
That night he had stomach-ache!
The next day was Sunday again. The caterpillar ate through one nice green
leaf, and after that he felt much better.
Now he wasn‟t hungry anymore- and he wasn‟t a little caterpillar any more.
He was a big, fat caterpillar.
He built a small house, called a cocoon, around himself. He stayed inside for
more than two weeks.
Then he nibbled a hole in the cocoon, pushed his way out ………
He was a beautiful butterfly!
The Little Duckling
Andrew Wright

The little duckling sees a peacock. “What a beautiful tail! I want a beautiful
tail, too!” Suddenly the little duckling has a big, beautiful peacock‟s tail! The
little duckling is very pleased.
The little duckling sees a flamingo. “What a beautiful legs! I want beautiful
legs, too!” Suddenly the little duckling has long, thin, pink legs! The little
duckling is very pleased.
The little duckling sees an eagle. “What a beautiful wings! I want beautiful
wings, too!” Suddenly the little duckling has big, brown! The little duckling is
very pleased.
The little duckling sees a cock. “What a beautiful hat! I want a beautiful hat,
too!” Suddenly the little duckling has a big, red, handsome hat! The little
duckling is very pleased.
All the little duckling‟s friends swim in the river. The little duckling says,
„Stop! Wait for me!‟And he jumps into the water.
But his peacock‟s tail is very heavy. His big, brown wings are very heavy. His
long, thin, pink legs cannot swim. His handsome red hat is very heavy and he
can‟t breathe.
„Glug! Glug! Glug! I want a little duckling‟s tail, and a little duckling‟s legs
and wings, and I don‟t want a hat!‟

The very busy spider
By Eric Carle

Early one morning, the wind blew a spider across the field. A thin, silky,
thread trailed from her body. The spider landed on a fence post near a farm
yard…
And began to spin a web with her silky thread.
Neigh! Neigh! Said the horse. “Want to go for a ride?”
The spider didn‟t answer. She was very busy spinning her web.
Moo! Moo! Said the cow. “Want to eat some grass?”
The spider didn‟t answer. She was very busy spinning her web.
Baa! Baa! Bleated the sheep. “want to run in the meadow?”
The spider didn‟t answer. She was very busy spinning her web.
Maa! Maa! Said the goat. “Want to jump on the rocks?”
The spider didn‟t answer. She was very busy spinning her web.
Oink! Oink! Said the pig. “ Want to roll in the mud?”
The spider didn‟t answer. She was very busy spinning her web.
Woof ! woof! Barked the dog. “Want to chase a cat?”
The spider didn‟t answer. She was very busy spinning her web.
Meow! Meow! Cried the cat. “Want to take a nap?”
The spider didn‟t answer. She was very busy spinning her web.
Quack! Quack! Called the duck. “Want to go for a swim?”
The spider didn‟t answer. She had now finished her web.
Cock- a- doddle- do! Crowed the rooster. “Want to catch a pesty fly?”
And the spider caught the fly in her web… just like that!

Goldilocks and the three bears

Once upon a time there was a little girl. Her name was Goldilocks. She had
golden hair. One day Goldilocks was walking in the forest. She saw a house
and knocked on the door. She went inside. Nobody was there. Goldilocks saw
three bowls on the table. She was hungry. “This porridge is too hot! This
porridge is too cold! This porridge is just right!” Goldilocks ate all the
porridge. Goldilocks was tired now. “This chair is too big! This chair is too
big, too! This chair is just right!” But the chair broke. Goldilocks was very
tired. She went upstairs. “This bed is too hard! This bed is too soft! This bed is
just right!” Soon, the bears came home. “Someone‟s been eating my
porridge!” said Daddy bear. “Someone‟s been eating my porridge!” said
Mummy bear. “Someone‟s been eating my porridge - and it‟s all gone!” said
Baby bear. “Someone‟s been sitting on my chair!” said Daddy bear.
“Someone‟s been sitting on my chair!” said Mummy bear. “Someone‟s been
sitting on my chair - and it‟s broken!” said Baby bear. “Someone‟s been
sleeping in my bed!” said Daddy bear. “Someone‟s been sleeping in my bed!”
said Mummy bear. “Someone‟s been sleeping in my bed - and she‟s still
there!” said Baby bear. Goldilocks woke up and saw the three bears. “Help!”
She ran downstairs and into the forest. She never came back again.
There's an Alligator under my Bed
By Mercer Mayer

There used to be an alligator under my bed.

When it was time to go to sleep, I had to be very careful, because I knew he
was there.
But whenever I looked, he hid or something, so I called Mom and Dad,
"MOM! DAD!" But they never saw it……….
It was up to me – I just had to do something about that alligator.
So I went to the kitchen to get some alligator bait. I filled a paper bag full of
things that alligators like to eat.
I put a peanut butter sandwich, some fruit, and the last piece of pie…. in the
garage. I put cookies down the hall. I left fresh vegetables on the stairs. I put a
soda and some candy next to my bed and then I watched and….. waited.
Sure enough, out he came, to get something to eat.
Then I hid in the hall closet. I followed him down the stairs. I followed him
down the hall. When he crawled into the garage, I slammed the door and I
locked it….
Then, I went to bed. There wasn't even any mess to clean up.
Now that there's an alligator in the garage, I wonder if my Dad will have any
trouble getting in his car tomorrow morning. I'll just leave him a note:
Dear dad,
there's an alligator in the garage
if you need my help, wake me up!
I Was So Mad By Mercer Mayer

I wanted to keep some frogs in the bathtub but mom wouldn‟t let me. I was so
mad.
I wanted to play with my little sister‟s doll house but dad wouldn‟t let me. I
was son mad.
I wanted to water the garden but Grandpa said: “No, you can‟t”
So, I decided to decorate the house, but Grandpa said: “No, you can‟t do that
either” I was very mad.
Dad said: “Why don‟t you play in the sand box?”
I didn‟t want to do that.
Mon said: “why don‟t you play on the slide?”
I didn‟t want to do that either.
I was too mad.
I wanted to practice my juggling show instead. But mom said, “no you can‟t”
I wanted to tickle the Gold fish. But mom said, “leave the gold fish alone”
“You won‟t let me do anything I want to do”, I said, “I‟ll guess I‟ll run away.”
That‟s how mad I was.
So, I packed my wagon with my favorite toys and I packed a bag of cookies to
eat on the way.
Then I walked out the front door. But my friends were going to the park to
play ball. “Can you come, too?” they asked.
“Can I go?” and mom said I could. I‟ll run away tomorrow if I‟m still so mad.

The lazy bear Story
By Sue Clarke

It‟s spring in the forest. The snow has gone, leaves are growing and the
animals are waking up.
Bruno the bear is still asleep.
He doesn‟t know that it‟s spring.
“Listen! Bruno is snoring!”
Now it‟s summer. It‟s warm and the animals are having lots of fun. But
where‟s Bruno?
Bruno is still asleep. He doesn‟t know that it‟s summer.
Now it‟s autumn. The leaves are turning red, yellow and orange.
The animals are getting ready for winter. But where‟s Bruno?
Bruno is still asleep. He doesn‟t know that it‟s autumn.
Now it‟s winter. You can‟t see the animals. They‟re all asleep in their warm
homes. But where‟s Bruno?
“What a nice, long sleep. Snow! It‟s winter! I‟m all alone.”
It‟s spring again. The animals are very happy.
They‟re having a party. But where‟s Bruno?
“Bruno!”
Bruno is awake at last. Now he knows that it‟s spring.
