Single Component PVT Simulation Study

The document discusses using a PVT simulator to experimentally determine phase behavior data, such as bubble point and dew point pressures, for a single component like carbon dioxide. The simulator allows interactive experiments that mimic a real PVT apparatus but are faster and safer. Key steps involve using the simulator to measure bubble points at 4 temperatures as mercury is removed from a visual cell, causing carbon dioxide gas to form and separate from the liquid. These pressure-temperature data points can then be used to construct the saturation envelope for carbon dioxide on a phase diagram.

Single Component Study Using

PVT Simulator

Fathi PNGE 332 1

Motivation
 Reservoir Engineers routinely work with data obtained from PVT
studies but maybe less familiar with the experimental procedure
used to obtain that data
 Experiment can be done either using
 Physical PVT apparatus
 PVT simulator (interactive computer program mimics real world situation)
 Allows any operation that would be possible during actual PVT experiment
 More quickly than actual experiment
 Avoids risks associated with high pressure experiments
 You are allowed to do mistakes (opening wrong valve and blowing up the equipment)
 We make better use of our time while still learning the principles
 This simulator responds just as the apparatus would, only quicker
 Peng-Robinson equation of state (PR-EOS) is used to calculate phase behavior
using PVT simulator
 You should refer to the course materials and text book for more
rigorous discussion on theory of phase behaviour, phase diagrams,
etc.

Table 1 commands to PVTLAB

F2: opens/closes valves F7: sets the BPR pressure

F3: sets the servo pump F8:evacuates the gas collection vessel
F4:runs the servo pump F9:charges the chromatograph
F5: utilized the hand pump F10: performs chromatographic analysis
F6: utilizes the LC pump

Assumptions:
1. Thermodynamic equilibrium is instantaneous
2. Joule-Thomson effects are neglected pressure changes take place isothermally
3. Mercury is incompressible
4. The tubing system has no volume

Experiment 1: Single Component Study
Using The PVTLAB Simulator
 Determine Bubble point and dew point pressure of pure carbon
dioxide at 4 different temperature
 These points are determined by removing mercury from the visual
cell
 Increasing cell volume
 Gas being liberated from the liquid
 As more mercury removed more gas forms and less liquid remains
 With these data and knowledge of critical point (Table 2 page 11)
you can draw the saturation envelop
