Assigned Problems.

Unless otherwise specified, you may give all solutions implicitly.

Q1: Consider a population P (t) whose birth rate is given by b = b0 + cos t and
whose death rate is equal to b0 . The population satisfies the ODE
dP
= (cos t) P.
dt
(i) Find the general solution.
(ii) Does it have a singular solution?
(iii) Find the particular solution with P (0) = 100. What is the maximum size that
the population ever attains?

Q2: (i) Find the general solution to the ODE

dy x y 1/3
= .
dx 1+y
(ii) Show that it also has a singular solution.
(iii) Find a particular solution subject to the initial condition y(1) = 1. Is it unique
for all values of x?
(iv) Find a particular solution subject to the initial condition y(3) = 1. Is it unique
