Rizal's Marriage and Catholic Controversy

This document provides 10 true/false statements about key events in Philippine history, specifically related to Jose Rizal and the Cry of Rebellion. It also asks the student to argue whether Rizal truly retracted his writings in order to marry Josephine Bracken, or if there are valid perspectives that contradict that claim. The student argues that Rizal respected the Catholic Church but criticized corrupt friars, and that he needed to free himself from restrictions in order to fight against the friars, but did not directly attack the Church itself.

 As Filipino I can’t really deny that Dr. Jose Rizal really made a big impact in the Philippines as
our National Hero, and I don’t agree about the retraction of Dr. Jose Rizal. Dr. Jose Rizal is not
angry in the Catholic religion, he hates the disciples of God who do not practice true godliness.
He loves his parents and siblings - they are Catholics, so he respects the Catholic Church, he
hates plastic people who are also members of the Catholic religion who say they are godly,
supposedly. Rizal did not attack the Catholic Church in general, he attacked the Friars, friars
here in the Philippines. Now for him to do his job to fight the friars, he needed to free himself
but he never directly attacked the Catholic church in general.
