First Black Diamond Snowboarding Adventure

The document describes the narrator's experience skiing at Pine Knob for the first time and facing their fear of going down a black diamond slope. They felt nervous on the ride to the ski resort and putting on their gear. While waiting at the top of the black diamond, an older gentleman advised them "Decide that you want it more then you are afraid of it," which gave them the courage to go down the steep slope. Although it was bumpy, the narrator made it to the bottom safely and was filled with joy from conquering their fear. They were eager to go down the black diamond slope again.

On the Edge

By: Nerissa Longroy

When we drove to pine knob I was squirming in my seat I was so nervous. Then we finally

arrived to pine knob and I saw everyone speeding down the hill to what it looked like they were

going 80 miles per hour. We got out of the car and the coldness touched my nose and went

down my spine, it almost felt like as cold as Antarctica, I grabbed my snowboard and headed off

to go get our lift tickets. After we got out lift tickets we walked out of the lodge and then put

on our skis and snowboards. I sat on the ground putting the straps on for my bindings. After we

were all ready to go we slid down to the ski lift. We made it to the ski lift and then were waiting

in the line to be next to hop on the ski lift. We hopped on. My best friend and I were talking and

she asked me “Are you scared?” I responded “No not really.” I wanted to seem tough and not

scared but deep inside I felt my guts twisting and turning from the nervousness. The rest of the

ride up to the top of the hill felt like hours we were just waiting, waiting and waiting. We finally

reached the top of the hill, hopped off, then went to the black diamond to strap on our

bindings. So I sit down and while I’m putting on my bindings my friends ask “Is it your first time

black diamond?” “Yes.” I say. Then they ask “How nervous are you to do down it?” I said the

same thing as before “No not really actually.” Even though I was so, so nervous to go down.

Everyone says “Are we ready to go down?” We don’t say nothing by they know that everyone’s

ready. They start going down one by one and then I was the last person to be at the top of the
hill. I sit there looking at everyone racing down the hill. I sat there stunned not knowing if I

should go down or not. Then I saw all my friends at the bottom of the hill waiting for me to

come down. I saw my best friend waving for me to come down. Then this older gentleman

comes and sits down next to me putting his bindings on and he looks at me and says “Decide

that you want it more then you are afraid of it.” Then he got up and went gliding down the side

of the hill. I sat there pondering about what he said to me. So I did used to get up and go down.

I start off with a smooth carve and I keep going back and forth, from one side of the edge to the

other. I felt so free smoothly gliding down the hill, I started to make it towards the bottom of

the hill and it starts to get really bumpy but I don’t fall. I did it. I went to my friends with the

biggest smile on my face. The adrenaline felt so amazing. I wanted to go again.
