Course Title: 5th Grade Mathematics- 3-digit x 2-digit Multiplication Learning Module
Course Description: This course first covers the 5th Grade Georgia Standard of Excellence Standard
[Link].5 that calls for expanding prior knowledge of multiplication to learn how to multiply up to 3-digit
factors by 2-digit factors.
Course Objectives:
Students can explain strategy to solve 3-digit by 2-digit multiplication.
Students can use strategy to solve 3-digit by 2-digit multiplication.
Georgia Performance Standards:
[Link].5 Fluently multiply multi-digit whole numbers using the standard algorithm (or
other strategies demonstrating understanding of multiplication) up to a 3-digit by 2-digit factor.
Course Activities:
Assessments & Quizzes: Students will take multiple assessments related to the standards. These
assessments will be multiple choice or fill in the answer computation problems or in the form of
an error analysis. The assessments throughout the course will be used as formatives to drive
instructions. The summative assessment will be used to determine mastery of standard.
Discussions: Students will be required to participate in two discussion posts. These posts will
require students to post a response to the topic as well as to a peer.
Projects: Students will complete a Camping Project in which they must use multiplication to plan
a camping trip.
Participation: This course is heavily based on participation. Students will have to watch videos,
complete interactives, and complete group- based practice activities during the course and show
proof of participation.
Course Assignments:
Day 1:
1. Take Pre-Assessment (P)
2. Watch Instructional Video (P)
3. Create a checklist to remember the steps from the video. (Example) (P)
4. Use checklist to complete Boom Cards (P)
5. Discussion (D)
Day 2:
1. Multiplication Simulator (P)
2. Tic-Tac-Toe Practice Task (P)
3. Error Analysis (Q)
Day 3:
1. Formative Assessment (P)
2. Independent Practice (Drag -n- Drop Math)/Teacher Intervention (P)
3. BeeHive Practice Task (P)
4. Quiz (Q)
Day 4:
1. Differentiated Instruction (Based on Day 3 Quiz)
2. Final Project Trip (A)(P)
o Day 5:
1. Summative Assessment (SA)
2. Finish Final Project: Camping Trip (A)(P)
3. Discussion (D)
Course Evaluation: (GradeBook Breakdown- Click here for rubrics and final grade calculation breakdown)
Participation (P) (40 points): Students will be given ten practice task during this course to help
build fluency with multiplication. Students must participate in practice task and submit proof of
participation to obtain credit. Each task marked with a (P) counts for 4 points toward final
participation grade.
Discussions (D) (10 points): Students will have two required discussions. Each discussion is
worth 5 points towards their final grade. Students receive 4 points for their initial post and 1 point
for responding to a peers post.
Quizzes (Q) (10 points): Students will take have two quiz grades. One will be from an error
analysis that will be completed on Day 2. The other will be an actual computation quiz on Day 3.
Project (A) (20 points): Students will complete a Camping Trip Project that matches our learning
objectives.
Summative Assessment (SA) (20 points): The summative assessment will be worth 20 points
towards the students final grade.
Grading Scale:
A 100-90
B 80-89
C 70-79
F 69 or below
Student Expectations:
Students are expected to maintain a presence within the course.
Students are expected to use resources provided throughout course to complete assignments.
Students are expected to all complete course work by 10 PM on the assigned day.
Late work will receive a penalty of 1 point per day. (Example: A quiz completed 2 days late will
have a maximum score of 3 out of 5 points).
o If course begins on July 13, all work for day 1 is expected to be completed and
submitted by 10 PM on July 13.
Students are expected to collaborate with other peers respectfully during discussions and
partner/group assignments.
Students are expected to e-mail professor with any questions and concerns regarding the course.
Instructor Expectations:
Instructor is expected to respond to all student inquiries within two hours, if inquiry is made
between 8 AM - 5 PM.
Instructor is expected to provide additional support to students upon request.
Learner Resources:
Georgia Performance Standards
Standard Algorithm Instructional Video
Multiplication Simulator
Academic Honesty Policy:
Academic Honesty is expected of all students at all times. This means that students should use
their own understanding of the content concepts to complete their own work. Group assignments
should be a collaborative effort in which everyone does their part. If outside resources are used to
assist in assignment completion, student should ensure to give credit to said resources.
