Best Network Simulators for Students

This document outlines the methodology for a project comparing the usability of the GNS3 and Cisco Packet Tracer network simulators. The author will configure three routing protocols - OSPF, EIGRP, and BGP - in each simulator and evaluate how easy they are to configure. Additionally, groups of students will use the simulators to model a university network with four departments and VLANs, and their network knowledge will be assessed before and after the lab.

Methodology

Introduction:

In this project, i will be focusing on which Network Simulator is best for 1st year students to
practice Networking concepts. I have gone through a list of widely used Simulators and seen
reviews from experts according to 'easy to use/user friendly' of used Network Simulators i.e.
Omnett, GNS3, GNS2, Cisco Packet Tracer, Virl, NetSim etc. [ CITATION 5Be20 \l 1033 ][ CITATION
Net203 \l 1033 ]

After carefully going through all of mentioned above simulators, I have decided to use and
compare GNS 3 and Cisco Packet Tracer in terms of easy to use. Cisco Packet Tracer(CPT) and
GNS3 are by far the most widely used Simulators [ CITATION Top20 \l 1033 ]. I will also be using
the WireShark to see and analyze how network traffic flows.

To dos:

In order compare how user friendly CPT and GNS 3 are, I will run 3 routing protocols. Routing
Protocols I have decided to use are:

1. OSPF.

2. EIGRP.

3. BGP.

OSPF and EIGRP are Interior gateway routing protocols, which means that they are used within
a single Autonomous network. Whereas, BGP is Exterior Gateway routing protocol, which
means it is used among different Autonomous networks.
This will help me better understand how easy is to configure routing protocols and which allows
more complex networks to be configured. Reason being that, configuration is the most difficult
part.

If we take a scenario of having total of 280 students. I will make groups of 40 students. Each
group will Simulate a network, in which there will be 4 departments of University i.e. IT,
Finance, Academia and Student Support. Each group will be asked to make further 10 student
sub-group and make VLAN for a whole network.

There will be pretest and posttest to understand basic network knowledge and of students, to
see where students stand before and after the Networking lab.

The document emphasizes group work by suggesting that the 280 students be divided into groups of 40, with each group simulating a network for different university departments. Furthermore, these groups are asked to create VLANs for the entire network. This collaborative approach encourages teamwork and communication, key skills in real-world networking environments, while also providing diverse perspectives and shared learning experiences .

The document proposes evaluating the effectiveness of network simulators by conducting pretests and posttests to measure students' understanding of networking concepts before and after using the simulators. The idea is to see where students stand initially and how their knowledge improves after the networking lab sessions, thus directly correlating the tools' usability with educational outcomes .

The document describes configuration as the most difficult part of using network simulators, indicating that students might face challenges in understanding and implementing the settings required for various routing protocols. These difficulties are compounded when dealing with complex networks and interfaces, thereby highlighting the need for user-friendly tools that simplify the configuration process .

The document suggests using WireShark to analyze how network traffic flows within the simulated environments. This tool provides educational benefits by offering students a hands-on approach to understand packet transfers, network security issues, and data management across the network. WireShark's ability to visualize and interpret network data can enhance comprehension of abstract networking concepts .

Using both Interior Gateway Routing Protocols (OSPF and EIGRP) and Exterior Gateway Routing Protocols (BGP) allows the study to cover a comprehensive range of networking scenarios. Interior protocols are used within a single Autonomous System, while exterior protocols are used between different Autonomous Systems. This setup simulates both intra-network and inter-network configurations, providing a broader perspective on the complexities involved in configuring routing protocols .

The document provides the rationale that GNS3 and Cisco Packet Tracer are the most widely used simulators, indicating their popularity and established reputation in the field. They were chosen particularly for their user-friendliness, which is a critical factor for first-year students who are new to networking concepts. This choice aligns with the project's focus on ease of use and the effective learning of networking principles .

The primary objective is to determine which network simulator, GNS3 or Cisco Packet Tracer, is more user-friendly for first-year students learning networking concepts. This includes assessing how easy it is to configure different routing protocols like OSPF, EIGRP, and BGP and understanding network traffic flows using tools like WireShark .

Incorporating VLANs into the simulated network activities is valuable because VLANs are essential for managing network traffic and enhancing security within an organization. They help in segmenting networks into smaller, more manageable pieces, allowing controlled traffic flow and reduced congestion, which are crucial skills for networking students to learn .

Organizing students into smaller sub-groups aims to promote active learning and engagement through close collaboration. This structure allows for more focused discussions, personalized feedback, and a division of labor that can lead to a better understanding of networking concepts. Additionally, it fosters problem-solving skills, where students collaboratively tackle network configuration challenges and effectively manage VLANs within a controlled environment .

Ease of configuration is crucial because configuration is often the most challenging part of networking simulations. A user-friendly simulator allows students to focus more on learning networking concepts without being bogged down by complex setup processes. This is especially important for beginners who can benefit more from comprehensible tools that do not obstruct the learning process with unnecessary complexity .
