“MATHEMATICS, is not about numbers, equations, computations, or algorithms :it is about
UNDERSTANDING”
Goodmorning!Last week we have discussed The One to one functions and now we proceed to
our next lesson which is the inverse of one-to-one function .
Today’s Lesson:
LESSON 8: Inverse of One-to-One Functions
Learning Outcomes: At the end of the lesson, the learners is able to determine the inverse of a
one-to-one functions.
Lesson Outline:
Inverse One-to-one functions
Finding the inverse of a one-to-one function
Property of inverse functions.
The important of one-to-one function is due to the fact that these are the only functions
that have an inverse, as defined below.
Definition: Let f be a one-to-one function with the domain A and the range B. The the
inverse of f , denoted by f-1 , is a function with domain B and range A defined by f-1(y)=x
if and only if(x)=y for any yin B.
A function has an inverse if only if it is one-to-one [Link] a function f is not one-to-
one ,properly defining an nverse function f-1 will be [Link] example, suppose
that f(1)=5 and f(3)=5. If f-1 exist, then f-1(5)has to be both 1 and 3, and this prevent f-
1
from being a valid function. This is the reason why the inverse is only defined for one-
to-one functions.
To find the inverse of a one-to-one function:
1. Write the function in the form y=f(x)
2. Interchange the x and y variables:
3. Solve for y in terms of x
4. Let y= f-1(x)
Example [Link] the inverse of the function is y=3x+1
Solution: The equation of the function is y=3x+1
Interchange the x and y variable: x=3y+1
Solve for the y in terms of x: x=3y+1
x-1=3y
x-1= y
3
y = x-1

Therefore the inverse of f(x)=3x+ 1 is f-1(x)= x-1

Example 2. Find the inverse of F(x)= 3_
X+5
Solution:
a. Let y=f(x) Y= 3_
X+5
b. interchange x and y x= 3_
y+5
c. Solve for y X(y+5)=5
Xy+5x=3
Xy=3-5x
Y=3-5x
X
Y= 3 -5

d. Let y=f-1(x) f-1(x)= 3 -5
