Related Rates in Calculus Examples

The document provides examples and problems for calculating rates of change involving volumes of liquids flowing into cylindrical and conical containers. It gives the formulas for volume of a cylinder and cone used to relate the rate of change of volume to the rate of change of height with respect to time. Five examples are worked through applying these relationships and formulas to problems involving liquids flowing into containers at constant rates, finding diameters, rates of height increase and flow rates. A problem set with 10 additional problems is then provided to practice these skills.

DIFFERENTIAL AND INTEGRAL CALCULUS

Second Semester School Year 2019 – 2020

RELATED RATES / TIME RATES

March 16 – 20, 2020

In solving Time Rate Problems, it is important to observe that all quantities which change with
respect to time must be denoted by letters. Do not substitute the numerical values of such
variable until after differentiation with respect to time t is done.

Example 1
Oil flows into a vertical cylindrical tank at 500 [Link]/sec. The oil rises at 0.15 cm/sec.
Determine the diameter of the tank in cm.

Solution
V =πr 2 h
dV dh
=πr 2
dt dt
500=πr 2 (0.15 )

Example 2
Water flows at the rate of 2000 [Link]/sec into a vertical cylindrical tank 120 cm in diameter and
6 meters high. How fast is the water level rising in cm/sec?

Example 4
Water is flowing into a conical vessel at a constant rate of 4 [Link]/sec. The diameter at the top is
