Message From the Chairperson

Dear Colleague,

Welcome to the 2015 SPE Canada Heavy Oil Technical Conference, the premier heavy oil
engineering event in the world. Thank you for your attendance at this year’s conference and a
special thanks to the keynote speakers, panelists, and paper presenters for their contributions
to what will be a timely and rewarding program.

Collaboration, networking, and technology are pillars of SPE, and they are the keys to reducing
the barriers to development and economic activity in the heavy oil and bitumen industry.
Please capitalize on the opportunity presented by this conference and the accompanying
Global Petroleum Show to interact with some of the very best in the industry.

This year’s event is themed “Barrels of Knowledge,” tying the philosophy of communication,
knowledge, and collaboration to increased productivity. Our intent for the paper sessions is

to provide practical knowledge, results, and understanding for the practicing engineer based
on actual tests and projects that can be quickly used in this manner. Additionally, our panel
on collaboration is geared toward providing understanding and perspective on the best ways
to work together in the future. The broad experiences and diversity of perspective are sure
to stimulate interesting discussion. Our panel of SPE executives is a new addition to the
conference. They have been engaged to outline the efforts that SPE is making locally and
internationally to promote petroleum engineering—the knowledge and the collaboration.
They have also come to hear your ideas for a better SPE.

The organizing committee looks forward to hosting you for the 2015 SPE Canada

Keynote Speaker: Chris Seasons

Chris Seasons is a professional engineer with more than 30 years of domestic and
international experience in the upstream oil and gas industry. From 2004 until his
retirement in June 2014, he served as President of Devon Canada. Devon Canada
produced approximately 200,000 barrels a day, with the production mix shifting
from a gas-dominated asset base to an exclusively heavy oil company during his
tenure. Before Devon, Seasons also worked with Northstar Energy, Shell Canada,
and Toro Oil & Gas in a variety of technical and managerial positions.

Who Should Attend: The SPE Young Professional is any professional in any
technical discipline aged 35 or under who currently works in the energy sector.
Engineers, geoscientists, business professionals, finance professionals, landmen,
