Developing Communication Skills

Communication skills are acquired through nurture, not nature. While people are born with basic communication abilities, these skills are undeveloped and must be improved over time through practice, like exercising muscles at the gym. Learning to listen better and becoming more self-aware of emotional reactions to different situations helps improve communication abilities and reduce stress and conflict. Not practicing communication skills leaves them undeveloped.

Business Communication

Q 1: Are communication skills acquired by nature or by nurture? Explain.

We are born with little and unpolished communication abilities, but they are within us
and like any other, they can be improved or developed over time, with practice. Just as we go
to the gym to exercise our muscles, we can exercise our soft skills. Learning to listen more
effectively and then practicing that skill will improve our abilities as a communicator.
Becoming more aware of how our reactions change in response to different situations will
help us to manage our emotional reaction to them, and in time, will allow us to reduce stress
and conflict. On the other hand, not exercising these skills will leave them undeveloped. As
we become more self-aware of how we are acting and/or reacting, we can modify our
behavior, and increase the effectiveness of our communication.
The abilities to listen, speak, read, and write efficiently are not inborn, you can learn it
and then improve it over time.
