DIFFUSION
P.D: #1
DATE: 17/10/2020
TOPIC: Diffusion
AIM: To observe if diffusion occurs faster (rate of diffusion) in hot water or in cold
water.
HYPOTHESIS: Diffusion will occur faster in hot water than in cold water.
APPARATUS: Food dye (Solute)
Hot water (solvent)
Cold water (Solvent)
Measuring cup (2/3 cup)
PROCEDURES:
1. Gather and set up all materials.
2. Label 1 cup A and the other B.
3. Add 2/3 cups of hot water to cup A and 2/3 cups cold water to cup B.
4. Add 2 drops of food dye to cup A and 2 drops of food dye to cup B.
5. Observe rate of diffusion in both cups.
6. Record observations in a table format.
7. Repeat steps 1-6 to verify results.
RESULTS/OBSERVATIONS:
Cup labelled Water State Inference/Observations
A Hot/liquid The dye in cup A diffused at
a faster rate. The dye
dissolved faster.
B Cold/liquid The dye in cup B diffused at
a slower rate. The dye took
longer to dissolve.
CONTROLLED VARIABLES:
[Link] of hot water and cold water (2/3 cups).
2. Drops of food dye (2 drops).
INDEPENDENT VARIABLE:
1. Temperature of the water (cold or hot).
DEPENDENT VARIABLE:
1. The rate of diffusion (slow or fast).
EXPECTED RESULTS:
It is expected that the temperature of water (hot or cold) that will dissolve the
food dye faster is the best temperature that helps diffusion to occur faster.
DISCUSSION:
If hot water dissolves the food dye faster than cold water, then that means
that hot water helps diffusion to occur faster. In other words, the higher the
temperature the faster the rate of the diffusion and the lower the temperature
the slower the rate of diffusion.
A precaution that should be taken is to be careful when handling hot objects
and hot water. Another precaution to be taken is to not take too long to do this
experiment or else the hot and cold water can go back to room temperature.
A limitation would be the effects of the exothermic and endothermic reactions to
the cold and hot water caused by environmental temperatures and conditions
A source of error would be that the amount of water was not measured
accurately or the number of drops of dye was miscounted when being added to
the water. This is because surface area and volume affects the rate of diffusion.
CONCLUSION: If diffusion occurred faster in the hot water then the hypothesis
was correct and it diffusion occurred faster in the cold water then hypothesis was
wrong and needs to be modified.
