Methods of Collecting Data

1. Interview Method
a. Direct Method – the researcher personally interviews the
respondent.
b. Indirect Method – the researcher uses other means of
communication like the telephone, email, etc.

2. Questionnaire Method
– is a list well planned questions written on paper which can be
either personally administered or mailed by the researcher to the
respondents using any of the following forms:

a. Guided-Response Type
Example:
1. Have you been helping the needy?
Yes _____ No _____. If your answer is yes, go to the next
question. If your answer is no, go to question number 3

b. Recall Type
Example:
a. Age
b. Sex
c. Civil Status
d. Length of stay in a community
e. Number of times you have been hospitalized due to
serious illness
c. Recognition Type

d. Dichotomous Type
Example:
1. Do you live alone?

e. Multiple Choice Type


Example:

f. Multiple Response Type


Example:
1. What appliances/devices do you have at home? Check or
tick before each number.

g. Free-Response Type
The respondent is not guided in giving his reply. He can
answer using his style.
h. Rating Scale Type
Example:
1. How serious is the drug problem in your barangay?

___ fairly serious

3. Empirical Observation Method


Observation is commonly used in psychological and
anthropological studies.
 Participant Observation
 Non-participant Observation

4. Test Method
Examples:
Aptitude tests, IQ tests, and Achievement tests

5. Registration Method
Examples:
Data obtained from government agencies.

6. Mechanical Method
The mechanical devices that can be used for social and
educational research in data gathering are the camera, projector,
video tape, tape recorder, etc. In medical researchers, the common
methods are x-ray machine, microscope, ultrasound, weighing
scales, CT Scan, etc.
