FOOD NUTRIENTS
for
HEALTHY LIVING
LESSON 4
Do you enjoy eating the food shown below?
These food items contain nutrients or substances
in food that make the body get energy, grow, and regulat
e body functions. As a child, you have the right to grow
up healthy and strong.
Food provides you with nutrients: The process in which
your body takes in and uses nutrients is called:
nutrition.
Here are the nutrients needed for good health. Too much or
too little of these nutrients can lead to poor health.
1. Carbohydrates and fats – found in “GO” foods.
They provide you energy.
2. Proteins – found in “GROW” foods. They promote
growth and body building.
3. Vitamins and minerals – found in “GLOW” foods.
They regulate body functions.

Tips to Proper Eating:
1. Eat a variety of foods. Make sure you eat go, grow, and
glow foods to ensure your body gets all the nutrients it
needs. You will learn more about this in the next lesson.
2. Do not eat too much fat, sugar, and salt. Too much fat
can lead to obesity or the condition of being overweight.
Too much sugar can also lead to obesity and can use
teeth to decay. Too much salt can use problems with the
heart and kidneys.
“HEALTH for LIFE”
Too much or too little of everything is not good for your
body. Eating just the right amount is called
“moderation.”
Eating foods in moderation is a healthy habit. It makes
you GO, GROW, and GLOW.
