Technology Lesson Plan – 1st Grade General Music

1. Time Needed: 20 minutes

2. Materials Needed: SmartBoard, sheet music

3. Learning Objective: Students will learn how compose rhythm patterns with quarter notes

and eighth notes through a SmartBoard activity.

4. Assessment: Students will compose rhythm patterns with quarter notes and eighth notes

through a SmartBoard activity.

5. Personal Objectives:

 Be positive and encouraging.

 Make sure all students are engaged.

6. Procedure:

 Greet students with “hello” song.

 Review how to clap quarter note and eighth note rhythms. Have quarter note and

eighth note rhythm patterns projected on the SmartBoard, and count and clap

them as a class.

 Call on individual student volunteers to read, count, and clap a rhythm pattern on

the board to the class.

 Project the document on the SmartBoard with a music staff, and images of eighth

and quarter notes at the bottom.

 “I am going to compose my own rhythm pattern”. Drag quarter notes and eighth

notes into the staff, then count the rhythm as a class.


 Have student volunteers come up to the SmartBoard to drag the notes onto the

staff to compose their own rhythm patterns. Count their rhythm patterns together

as a class.

7. Closure: Hand out staff paper to each student. “Great job composing your very own

rhythm patterns! I want you to go home and create a few of your own rhythm patterns

and bring it with you to our next class.”
