Chapter 8: INFORMATION SOCIETY


The information society is the term used for a society in which the creation, distribution,
and manipulation of information has become the most significant economic and cultural
activity. This society is vastly developing through the rise of science and technology in the
world.

In the 15th century, the development of printing press took place resulting to enabling
the people on different sides of the worlds to share their thoughts and ideas with each other
giving justification to the ancient Greek idea that knowledge should be shared and
communicated among humans. The ideas spread using this invention, for example, are the new
discoveries about the phenomenon of electricity that are keenly captivated by scientists who
then utilized science to create other technological products such as radio and television,
respectively, built upon electricity and magnetism.

One of the most popular developments in the information society is the World Wide
Web. The World Wide Web (WWW) has been a helpful invention in the information age and
has brought significant changes in the way I live my life today. This data processing and
information-sharing tool through the internet is something that this modern age might took for
granted but cannot live without. Through WWW, all available information is just one click away
to me if I have an access and can store as much data I can accumulate.

Along with the invention of the World Wide Web is the development of social media.
This internet tool paved the way for easier and fast communication among individuals. Since
the sharing of ideas through social media has become accessible to almost everyone, it has also
become an avenue for inaccurate and unreliable information. Thus, it became a challenge to
identify what is factual and what is not.

As a student, the challenge of identifying real news among all the fake news has been
hard. However, through the learning acquired in school, I am able not to be part of the
prevalent increasing population who cannot determine this type of information.
