Topic: Progressive Tenses of Verbs (Language)

Progressive form of verbs shows an action still in progress. The verbs in the progressive form


use a form of "to be" + the present participle (an -ing verb). It is a CONTINUOUS ACTION.

Past Progressive - it shows an action that was in progress in the past. Formed using was or were
with the -ing form of the verb.

Examples: I was working on my book report.


They were training when the villains came.

Present Progressive - shows an action which is in progress now.

Examples: I am designing a small rocket for our Science project.


Julian is singing.
Dr. Vergara’s assistant researchers are developing a new vaccine.

Future Progressive - it shows an action that will be in progress.

Examples: I will be eating lunch at Genevieve’s house tonight.


Tomorrow, our parents will be participating in our school’s Family Day program.

Activity
A. Change the following verbs in progressive form.

Irony is a figure of speech in which words are used in such a way that their intended meaning is
different from the actual meaning of the words.

It is use to express the opposite of something.

Situational Irony – The outcome contradicts or is different from what is expected.

Example: Martin is a cardiovascular surgeon yet he lost his son in a heart transplant.
The fire station is on fire.

Verbal Irony – it is the use of words to mean something different from what is said.

Examples: “I can’t wait to read this 500-page report.”


“Sure, I LOVE to look in the trash can to search for your wallet.”

Activity
Type “IRONY” if the sentence is an irony and “NOT IRONY” if it is not.

1. The Titanic was dubbed as an unsinkable ship but it sank in 1912. IRONY
2. I want to play basketball now. NOT IRONY
3. I’m so tired that I can do a lot of chores. IRONY
4. The name of America’s biggest dog is “Tiny.” IRONY
