MODULE 1. Orientation and Introduction to Evidence

Course Description
➢ Deals with the study of Legal Medicine, its definition, & scope applicable to
students of Criminal Justice System Course.
➢ Identification of different kinds of medical knowledge & application of medical science
for purposes of law & justice & to elucidate legal problems (Forensic Medicine).
Course Objectives
➢ At the end of the semester, this course intends to enable the students -
o To determine what is legal medicine.
o To know the relevant topics and their application.
o To be knowledgeable about basic and relevant information relating to legal &
forensic medicine.
o To ascertain medico-legal importance of evidence, deception/detection
methods, identification, life/death, physical injury, & other matters, & what are
to be excluded.

How to compute your GRADES?
I. Midterm Grade =
Quizzes (30%) = raw score /total items x 50 + 50 x 30%
Activities/Assignments (20%)
Attendance (10%)
Pre-Lim written Examination (40%)
Ex: Palma – 30+20+20+29.4 = 99.4 %
I. Final Grade = 30% of Midterm grade + 70% of Final grade
At the end of the lesson, students should be able
1. To know the scope of LM/FM.
2. To know evidence & the different types of medical evidence.
General Consideration
LM is a branch of medicine which deals with the application of medical knowledge (basic
& clinical, medical & paramedical) to the purposes of law & in the administration of
justice.
With its wide scope, LM, FM, & MJ are synonymous & used interchangeably.
Strictly, LM = medicine to legal cases.
FM = medical science to elucidate legal problems.
MJ = knowledge of law in relation to the practice of medicine.
History of Legal Medicine

2980 B.C. – Imhotep as 1 medico-legal expert (murder case).
2200 B.C. – Oldest Code of Law of Hammurabi with legislation on adultery, divorce, incest,
abortion and violence.
Hippocrates – the father of medicine.

1871 – LM was 1 included as an academic subject in UST medical school.
Medical Evidence
It is the means, sanctioned by the Rules of Court, of ascertaining in a judicial proceeding
the truth respecting a matter of fact.
Types of Medical Evidence
1. Autoptic or Real E. – made known to senses (vision, hearing, taste, smell, & touch).
2. Testimonial E. – must be given orally under oath.
3. Experimental E. – confirming or corroborating previous statements under
drugs/medicines.
4. Documentary E. – recorded through writings, figures, marks, pictures, videos, maps, or
plans. (Ex. MedCert, PEFs, Autopsy, Labs, Exhumation, BirthCert, DeathCert)
