ASTROPHYSICS
TOPIC OF INTEREST
I am interested in astrophysics for my independent study, which is the branch of
astronomy concerned with the physical processes associated with the celestial
bodies and the intervening regions of space. Astrophysicists use the laws of physics,
cosmology, and chemistry to get a deeper understanding of how the universe
works. Therefore, I will direct my research toward a slightly broader variety of
areas than solely astrophysics including cosmology and particle physics.
INTEREST & EXPERIENCE
I have been interested in astronomy and space-related topics ever since I was
young. I obtained a deeper understanding of the field of study I want to pursue
when I attended a science camp in middle school that explained different career
options and what they do. The closest experience I have had that would benefit me
in this topic is the three years I volunteered at Perot Nature and Science Museum.
As part of a group volunteer, my duties included aiding visitors around the museum,
answering their questions about the science behind displays, and conducting
experiments sponsored by Perot. Most of the time I would work in the Expanding
Universe Hall, which was the outer space exhibit. This experience was a highly
beneficial learning opportunity, providing me with a more in-depth understanding
of some specific aspects of astronomy.
SPECIAL SKILLS
My interest in astronomy combined with my aptitude for math led me toward the
astrophysics direction. I am able to use logic and reasoning to identify the strengths
and weaknesses of alternative solutions, conclusions or approaches to problems. I
am positive that an extensive math and physics knowledge will be extremely
valuable in order to obtain a job in this career, and I am currently building a strong
foundation for myself by taking AP Physics II and other vocational courses.
Moreover, I love gaining insight on matters related to space. Looking at the New
Releases section of [Link] is something I do on a daily basis. Learning about the
origin and functions of outer space is extremely appealing to me. I want to be an
astrophysicist because I have a constantly fueling passion for it.
