Vector Addition and Subtraction Worksheet

The document is a vector addition worksheet that provides examples of adding, subtracting, and finding the magnitude of vectors. Students are directed to add and subtract pairs of vectors shown in boxes, showing the process and resultant. They are also asked to use the Pythagorean theorem to find the magnitude of the result of adding vectors involving distance and speed or force.

Vector Addition Worksheet

(Linfield Summer)

Directions: Add each pair of vectors shown below in its box, making sure to show the vector addition as well as
the resultant with a dotted line and arrowhead. If there is no resultant, write “no R”.

Example:

R
Directions: Use the Pythagorean Theorem to find the resultant magnitude only for the addition of the following
vectors. Show the vector addition, the resultant, and the work using the Pythagorean Theorem.

Example: You walk 40 meters east, then 20 meters south.

40m 40m a2 + b2 = c2 becomes:

+
20m = 20m
402 + 202 = R2
R
1600 + 400 = R2

R = V 2000 = 44.7m

1. You move at 3 m/s directly north, then at 5 m/s directly west.

2. You drive 100 kilometers south, then 50 kilometers west.

3. You pull down with a force of 60 pounds, then to the right with a pull force of 20 pounds.

4. You accelerate in your rocket both 10 m/s2 up and 7 m/s2 horizontally.

Directions: Subtract the following pairs of vectors shown below in their boxes, making sure to show the vector
addition as well as the resultant with a dotted line and arrowhead. If there is no resultant, write “no R”.
