Transition to Q&A Session:

Martha-Experience Questions: (open ended, prompt participants to tell a story)

Q1: Can you give us a quick history of your current position at your company? And any
history of work that you can think of, and would like to share.

Q2: How was your experience as a Training/Development Manager for Latin America?
What was your experience working with many individuals in different cultures?

Q3: Can you tell us a story when a conflict developed, and how it was dealt with.

MC--Open floor for add-on questions---

(Robert) Generative Questions: (such as tour, timeline, hypothetical, behavior and

action, posing the ideal, compare and contrast, motive, and future questions)

Q1: Are there unique things you do to keep your team engaged during virtual
meetings/conference calls? Ice breakers and agendas are vital.

Q2: How do you manage conflict with your direct reports (Store Managers/ASMs)
versus within their teams? Must be honest, frank and clear. In person if possible is the
way to deal with conflict.

Q3: Tell us about your process of building the perfect team. How do you select which
leader goes into which environment? This starts with communication, any team can be
a great team. You have to have honesty and trust. Put stars where they will shine.

Q4: When you have a management team in place at a store, how do you prepare them to
coach and ensure their teams are resilient? Creating an assessment and being
calibrated properly with your management team.

Q5: Through all of your hard work and busy schedule, how do you handle a work/life
balance? Create white space within your calendar, have boundaries and make “life”
appointments to make sure you have time for you. End your days with journaling and or
a book.

MC--Open floor for add-on questions---

(Megan) Directive Questions: (including closed-ended, typology, elicitation, data-
referencing, member reflection, devils advocate, and potentially threatening
questions)

Q1: Leading subordinates is one thing, but how do you approach leadership amongst
your peers? In Starbucks terms, leading your store managers takes one approach, but
how do you approach leadership with other district managers? You must have respect
and trust. Listen carefully and ask clarifying questions. Seeking to understand before I
am understood. Watching your tone and going in with an open mind.

Q2: What would you consider to be your greatest “failure” and how were you able to
overcome it? How has this changed you as a leader and/or your approach to
leadership? There are no failures, there are only learning lessons. Don’t be cocky, stay
humble, and verify that the logistic items are handled ahead of time. Everything that
happens, is a chance to be stronger next time.

Q3: What traits do you consider to be the traits of a great leader? How do you think your
store managers view you as a leader? Curiosity, nimble, a problem solver, self
developing and has self awareness, being able to be a change agent, being able to
motivate and inspire others. Others view me as...IMO...fair, present/available, realistic,
empathetic, a driver (she pushes them) because she sees their greatness and wants
them to grow and show it. Possibly a little bossy.

MC--Open floor for add-on questions---

(Jocef) Closing the Interview: (catch-all questions, identity-enhancing, preferred

pseudonym)

Q1: As students studying leadership, what resources have you used that you would
recommend to continue to expand our understanding of leadership? There are many
books, but a mentor is key, and is something you can’t buy. Being able to be nimble and
move on from a mentor who maybe is not the right fit. Being able to have open dialog.

Q2: What is one piece of advice that you would like to leave us with today? Being afraid
is okay, but it’s not okay to move forward. Never not ask the question, or confront the
situation.

MC-Wrap-Up:
● Thank the interviewee for their time and let them know that we will send them a
link to the interview within 24 hours.

Martha: Q about HR...what is your HR scope within sbux?

Rosie: when in Latin America, she was in the HR world. She did assessments and
staffing, facilitation of policies and training. In US, it is a DMs responsibility to handle
the HR items unless a legal review is needed, which would be sent to Seattle, WA.

Rosie explains that HR is a BIG part of some organizations, they have their hands in soo
many different parts rather than staffing, payroll, etc. You technically are a business
partner within your organization. She said you can get an HR cert instead of waiting to
get your BA/BS degree.

Megan: What would you say is the hardest part of your job…?

Rosie: Sometimes she feels that she is unable to move the needle in a certain time
periods.

Sylvia ended it off…
