Chartism was a 19th century working-class movement in Britain that advocated political reforms. It demanded universal suffrage, equal electoral districts, voting by secret ballot, payment of Members of Parliament, and annual Parliaments. Chartism was founded in 1838 by William Lovett and Francis Place and lasted until 1848. It petitioned Parliament to adopt the People's Charter of 1838, which outlined these political reforms, but Parliament rejected the petition. While Chartism eventually faded, it helped advance later democratic reforms and had some influence on the development of the labor movement.
