Sandworms
The sand worm is a fictional creature that appears in the dune novels written by
Frank Herbert and first presented in 1965 in "Dune." Sand worms are colossal worms
- like creatures living on the desert planet Arrakis. They are the most famous of
the sand worms, a group of fictional creatures that appear in the Dunes novels that
Frank Herbert wrote in 1965 in his novel "The Sand Worm. [Sources: 3]
Sandworm larvae produce a drug called melange, colloquially known as a spice, which
is highly prized throughout the universe for its medicinal and mystical properties.
Sand worms, which are native to the desert planet Arrakis, are also known among the
Fremen as the creators of Shai Hulud. [Sources: 3]
Their fearsome crystalline teeth are mainly used to grate rocks and sand, but they
are mainly used as a food source for the Fremen. [Sources: 3]
Sand trout form the deserts of our planet and do their best to survive by pouring
the available free water. Sand worms are the only place in the known universe where
they occur, and they survive on sand and sandstone on the surface of the planet and
on the water inside. [Sources: 1, 3]
Their larval form, known as sand trout or small creatures, is formed by forming a
mixture of sand, sandstone and water in the form of a mélange that man harvests on
arrakis. This mixture, known in the spice mass, is created by mixing sand and water
from different sources, such as the sun, moon or even ocean. [Sources: 1, 3]
Indigenous Fremen consider the sandworm divine, but for everyone else it is only a
deadly plague, and the indigenous Persians also consider it "divine." [Sources: 3]
Numerous groups have tried to smuggle sand worms into Arrakis to break the monopoly
of the Atreides on Melange, but this is no longer the case in Children of Dune
(1976). Leto II allowed many trout to cover his body because they were deceived by
the concentration of spices in his blood. The Space Guild manipulated this by
replacing its navigators with Ixian navigation devices and cutting off their supply
of melange. [Sources: 3]
The Waff, an imperfectly awakened Tleilaxu - Gola, who has created a worm that is
capable of creating the mélange he so desperately needed. This was achieved by
altering the DNA of the trout stage, creating a new generation of sand worms with
the same genetic makeup as the original, and then releasing the worms into the sea
near Buzzell. [Sources: 3]
The pirates adapted to their new environment and eventually developed a highly
concentrated form of the spice, known as ultraspice. [Sources: 3]
As they molt and spread, they excrete a large part of the mélange into the desert
sand and the spice stores gush out. This process signals to the Fremen prospectors
to start mining, and so the sand worms of Arrakis grow their epochal lifespan from
tiny sand trout to the ones seen in the last frame of Villeneuve's first trailer.

Due to their size and territorial nature, sandworms can be extremely dangerous even
for the fremen. Given the importance of spices, one might ask why no one has yet
tried to transport sand worms to Arrakis. [Sources: 0, 3]
But they have also developed a device known as a knocker to create rhythmic
vibrations to attract sand worms. They have learned to avoid most worm infestations
by mimicking the movements of desert animals, and they can even move in the sand
without going crazy by the worms. Holtzman's force fields, which serve as personal
defensive shields, do not attract worms, however, because of their small size. As a
result, the force field on Arrakis is not very useful, but it has become accustomed
to worms in other parts of the world, such as the Middle East and South America.

Although sand worms are capable of eating humans, the latter contain water content
that is above the worms "preferred tolerance. They have no real interest in spices
and routinely devour mélange harvesters, confusing the mechanical rhythms with
their prey, but they seem to get their real food only from sand plankton and small
sand worms. The stunted worms are in primitive form and reach a length of only nine
meters. A small number then rise from the water, which is huge and, like sand
worms, poisonous. [Sources: 3]
Dune is the only planet that can sustain sandworm life, and thus remains the power
center in the galaxy. Like the dune, the desert of Arrakis is home to the largest
known source of sand worms, as well as [Sources: 0, 3]
One of the most exciting events in the history of Dune is the discovery of sand
worms on the planet Arrakis, a planet with a rich history of spice mining. To take
power on Arraice, they took control of all the spices on the planet - mining.

Without the sandworms on Arrakis, all spices and the conflict would be spoiled.
Sand worms are native to the desert on the planet Arraice, but not to the fictional
galaxy Herbert created. The first novel, Dune, published in 1965, first described
sand worms and was an important part of the Dunes world, a fictional world with a
rich history of spice mining. [Sources: 0, 2]
