Scripture Memory Suggestions – Assignment 3

1. Commit yourself to a daily time of memory rather than a certain number of verses.
15 min. per day is suggested.

2. Continually look for important verses of inspirational, evangelistic or theological value.


Record verses you locate immediately on 3x5 cards.

3. Rather than "force" memorize you should read new verses carefully each day and learn
them through a natural process with less psychological strain.

4. Total recall of any material demands regular review. Eventually you will have to spend
80% of your memory time in review. This overcomes the frustration of memorizing a
verse only to forget later. Now your verses will be memory-fresh forever.

5. For the first 2-3 months there will be great mental strain in regular memory. Once over
this psychological "hump" you will memorize faster with more ease.

6. Understand a verse and its context before memorizing it so that later you will use it
properly.

7. Review memorized verses as much or as little as you must to keep them memory-fresh.
This is the main principle behind the system below.

Review Categories:

To Be Added (new supply)


These verses are on 3x5 cards waiting to be added to the memory system. Add some of
these new verses each Sunday. Add as many as you can comfortably fit into your 15
min. of memory time. The number of verses you add can serve as a "pressure valve" to the
system. At first most people add from 4-10 new verses and then taper off later.

Daily
New verses begin here. Here they are read three times daily until you can quote them
perfectly. When you can quote a verse daily for 1-2 weeks, then it will be well planted in
your memory so that you can move it on to the WEEKLY categories.

Weekly
(Sun, Mon, etc.) Distribute the verses moved here evenly among the seven days of the
week. Here you will review a verse once per week by taking the appropriate day of the week
and quote each verse once. When you have added verses to the weekly categories so that
each day has 20 verses (total:140) you are ready for the next level of review categories.
(It will take you 6 months to one year).

Further Categories
When weekly categories are filled then your review system will have to be expanded. This
will allow you to keep adding new verses and reviewing old verses in 15 minutes. The next
category should review verses once every three weeks.
