Eveline decided to stay with her family for three key reasons: 1) She had promised her dying mother that she would keep the family together and care for her younger siblings. 2) As the sole provider for her family since her mother's death, Eveline felt a strong sense of responsibility to continue supporting them financially. 3) Eveline was confused and uncertain about Frank due to her father's negative views of sailors and Frank's character. Q: Why does Eveline want to stay or not to leave with Frank?

ESSAY:
There are several reasons for which Eveline decided to stay with her family and not to
leave i.e.

Eveline had to fulfill the promise she made to her mother before her death, about playing
a major role in keeping her family together under one roof. Moreover she had to take care of two
of her young siblings who were not young enough to take care of themselves. Eveline’s mother
had faced many hardships in her life as being married to a man that was good for nothing; this
disgrace had filled her life with pain. She always saw her mother struggling to give her children a
better life, thus fulfilling the duty of her husband.

Eveline, brought up in this kind of environment involuntarily gained a sense of


responsibility to also help her mother in ways to improve their living standard. After her
mother’s departure she was the only source of income for her family. She used to work hard in
stores from dawn to dusk. On returning home also had to manage her home task and look after
her brothers. As Eveline’s father was spoiled and selfish man, he used to go pubs every weekend
on her hard earned money. These chronic events had made her very aggressive towards life as
she had to cope up with this, also.

Eveline was also confused about Frank because of her father. As he not had any good
opinions about him; he used to comment about Frank in words that left Eveline puzzled about
her choice. It was her father’s belief that sailors are not the good persons and one ruin’s life
living with them. His experience has taught him that, sailors are characterless persons and they
are insensitive towards others. They just want to fulfill their sexual needs. Eveline herself also
didn’t feel that Frank love her. She was confused that whether Frank will take care of her later on
as she is leaving her home and will go to an unfamiliar place where she didn’t know anyone
rather she returns to home and face family members there.
Eveline herself was not enforced from inside as she was always threatened by her father
scold and forced to do home task besides also her mother passed away in her early life forcing
herself to take care of all the home and work in stores to run the home as her brother had to go
another city for earning a job in decorating a church. There was no one in her house that time to
help her.

At last Eveline understand that what is right for her and she decided that not to leave with
Frank and has to support her family.
