Operations on Rational Expressions Guide

This document provides instructions for performing operations on rational expressions, including multiplication and division. For multiplication, it instructs students to factor numerators and denominators, simplify common factors, and multiply. For division, it rewrites the division as a multiplication of the dividend by the reciprocal of the divisor and then follows the same steps as for multiplication. It also provides examples of performing multiplication and division of rational expressions and homework problems for students to practice.

MODULE 4: Operations on Rational Expressions Part 1

Multiplication of Rational Expressions

1. Factor the numerators and denominators. Look for greatest common

factors.
2. Simplify the common factors.
3. Multiply.
4. Check if the product is in its simplest form.

Division of Rational Expressions

1. Rewrite the division as the multiplication of the dividend by the

reciprocal of the divisor.
2. Use the steps for multiplication of rational expressions.
