GUIDELINES FOR RESEARCH ARTICLES
The research articles are divided in two categories:
1. Research Reports – They are long, lengthy and more complex legal research
articles.
2. Research Notes – They are short, concise and simple legal research articles.
A. Research Report:
1. The format of the report should be in the following format:
a. Cover Page (Find Attached Annexure I)
b. Index (Find Attached Annexure II)
c. Introduction
d. Chapters
e. Conclusion and Recommendations
2. The Introduction should be of minimum 1 page and should not exceed 2 pages. It should
give a brief overview of the research topic and the probable outcome derived from the
research report.
3. There should be 11 Chapters each having a main heading. It should be a comprehensive
breakdown of the research topic. Each Chapter should have subsequent sub-headings
to display categorization and breakdown of information pertaining to the respective
chapter.
4. The Conclusion should be of minimum 1 page and should not exceed 2 pages.
Recommendations (if any) should come after the conclusion. Recommendations should
only be advisory in nature.
5. Formatting Guidelines:
a. Margins: 2.54 cm each side (or “Normal” Margins);
b. Size: A4 Size Paper
c. File Format: Docx. or Doc.
d. Line Spacing: 1.5
e. Alignment of Text: Justified
f. Font Style: Times New Roman
g. Font Size:
i. Chapter Heading: 16, Bold and Capitalized
ii. Chapter Sub-Headings: 14, Bold and Italics
iii. Body: 12
h. Page Borders are required
i. Citations are required and must be in the endnotes (not footnotes). 20th Edition
of Bluebook Citation Style can be followed
j. Plagiarism should not be more than 10%
6. The overall content (exclusive of footnotes, cover page and index) should be not less
than 6,000 words but not exceed 10,000 words. It must be taken from valid authorities
such as journals, books, governmental websites, etc.
7. No particular bias towards “inclination towards a particular side/party” should be
present. The Research Report must display both the sides of the spectrum, i.e. it must
be neutral in nature.
8. Grammatical errors are strongly discouraged. The language should be formal and easy
to comprehend in order to cater to a large audience.
9. All Page Numbers must be numbered.
B. Research Note:
1. It should be minimum 1.5 pages and should not exceed 2 pages.
2. The format of the report should be in the following format:
a. Cover Page (Find Attached Annexure I)
b. Facts of the Research Problem
c. Problem of Law
d. Court Judgment (If any)
e. Analysis and Interpretation
f. Conclusion and Recommendations
3. Facts of the Research Problem should briefly describe all the intricate and extricate
facts of the research topic.
4. Problem of Law should be nothing more than simple question, i.e. for e.g. “Whether or
not A was liable under Section 299 of IPC?”. There can be multiple questions of law.
Ensure that they are written in concise and brief manner.
5. Court judgment should be written in brief with reasoning.
6. Analysis and interpretation of the author must be given pertaining to the research
problem. This part of the research note must be written in an elucidated and detailed
manner.
