CASE SCENARIO
You are a nursing student working in the community clinic when several members of Athena’s
community family approach you. They request that Athena needs to be taken to town because
she has complained of hearing voices and seeing things for a week’s telling her that she is ‘no
good’ and the community would be better off without him there. Athena is 24 year old
Indigenous woman who lives a traditional lifestyle in a rural town and has been initiated in
certain ceremonies. The family states that his behavior worsened after she was accepted into a
music program but was unable to go because her guitar was recently stolen during a burglary 3
weeks ago. Yesterday, she was found trying to hang herself with a rope on the family property.

Schizophrenia is a chronic brain disorder that affects less than one percent of the U.S.
population. When schizophrenia is active, symptoms can include delusions, hallucinations,
disorganizaed speech, trouble with thinking and lack of motivation.

General Objective:

To provide the students a standard critical thinking and skills in caring for people with
Depression using the applicable and effective nursing process.

Specific Objective:

At the end of this case study the students will able to:

 Identify the condition, risk factors and sign and symptoms of Depression
 Identify and understand the normal structure and function of the involve organ and the
pathophysiology of the disease.
 Comprehend the proper medical and surgical treatment of the disease.
 Provide proper nursing care and health teachings to the patient/ patients family, to
improve the condition and to prevent other complications
