Hurricane Odile’s Wall hits Baja California Sur

Phenomena to affect mainly La Paz and Loreto, clouds already by Sonora and Sinaloa.

September 14th, 2014

What started as a light rainfall and then morphed into a depression and a tropical storm has
evolved one more time. Hurricane Odile, category 3, will impact Los Cabos, Baja California Sur,
affecting five municipalities in the state, mainly La Paz and Loreto, according to a memo from
Conagua (Comisión Nacional del Agua).

Odile reached category 4 during the first hours of Sunday, and although its force decreased to
category 3, it’s still dangerous to certain parts of national territory, confirmed the SMN
(Sistema Meteorológico Nacional).

The federal government has also established a red code for Nayarit, part of Jalisco and Colima.
This code invites people to keep away from windows to ensure safety, stay in their homes or
shelter until the authorities determine so.

Meanwhile, Sinaloa’s Protección Civil has informed that school has been suspended on
Monday in seven municipalities: Elota, San Ignacio, Cosalá, Mazatlán, Concordia, El Rosario
and Escuinapa.

Odile is about 120 km. from Cabo San Lucas, the hurricane keeps quickly moving to the
northwest at a 26 km/h speed; also keeping the potential for strong rainfall in the center and
west of the country. The increase in sea’s temperature (over 26.5º during the summer), the
evaporation of this water and the creation of large cloud banks which move in a spiral form
with the wind might have influenced the strength of the hurricane.
