Question 1: Look at the figure 1. Answer the following questions: (i)
Draw the free body diagram of each component. (ii) Can this structure be
assumed to be a truss? Explain with reasoning. (iii) Identify the degree of
determinacy. If determinate, solve for the unknown reactions at the support.

Question 2: For the truss shown in figure 2 below, identify the forces in
all the members. Identify the members in tension and compression:

Question 3: Consider a flat desktop monitor lying on a table top. Draw
a two-dimensional representation of the problem. Assuming appropriate di-
mensions. For preventing toppling, at what distance does the (equivalent)
normal force act from the center of the base plate?
Question 4: Draw the bending and shear force diagram for the structures
shown in figure 3.

Question 5: Identify the degree of indeterminacy for the three trusses
shown in figure 4. Classify the indeterminate ones into externally and inter-
nally indeterminate structures. Can a structure be determinate yet unsta-
ble?

Question 6: Find the forces in members AC, AD and DE. Assume that
AC, AD and DE have a length of L and the applied force has a magnitude
of P .?
Question 7: Draw free body diagrams for the members AB, BC and CD as
shown in figure 6. The self weight of the members is 0.2KN/m. Determine
shear force, bending momemt at A.
Question 8: Draw the bending and shear force diagram for the structures
shown in figure 7.
Question 9: Draw the bending and shear force diagram for the structures
shown in figure 8. Neglect axial deformation.
Question 10: Determine the degree of external and internal indetermi-
nancy of the bow-string girder shown in figure 9. Assume all joints to be
rigid.

minate and indeterminate ? Calculate degrees of indeterminancies. Which
beams are unstable ?
Question 12: Which of the plane frames shown in figure 11 are statically
determinate and indeterminate ? Calculate degrees of indeterminancies.
