RATIONALE
The dynamics of change on social structures and processes experienced in
contemporary Philippines create national crises of great magnitude. In this area of
constant change and diversity, education plays a major role in providing avenues for its
populace to meet the prevailing needs of the time. As a result, a redirection in curricular
thrusts in all educational levels has been undertaken with due emphasis in
understanding man and his role to society. It is therefore imperative to the university to
design an educational program viable and relevant to such needs.
A new Master of Arts in Education major in Social Studies program is needed a
mechanism to help develop competent Social Studies teachers in the attempt to
strengthen the social science educational component of the university.
OBJECTIVES
At the end of the program, the graduates are expected to be:
1. Excellent educators who possess knowledge, skills and desired
characteristics necessary to cope with the demands of the 21 st
century;
2. Research-oriented and functional social studies educators; and
3. Effective catalysts of young minds to become responsible citizens of
their country as well as of the world.
COURSE DESCRIPTION
RSHDSG – Research Design
Procedure for planning, conducting, and reporting research, evaluation of current
research methods in education and social and behavioral sciences. Course output is a
thesis proposal.

STCMTD – Statistical Methods
Concepts, principles, applications, and interpretation of statistical methods in
various areas of researches.
3 units
CURINS – Curriculum and Instruction
Critical examination of the basic concept underlying the determination of
objectives, the selection and organization of learning opportunities, and the evaluation
process.
3 units
FNDEDU – Foundations of Education
Interactions and interrelationships between the individuals, society, and
education; social, philosophical concepts and systems as these relate to education.

MSSSSCURR – The Social Studies Education and the Curriculum
In depth inquiry into the role of social studies in the general education of the
individual. Spiral curriculum will be brought into focus. Problems in the implementation
of the social studies curriculum will be considered.

MSSIPPSST – Instructional Planning and Procedures in Social Studies
Inducts students to systematic planning of social studies instruction, the varied
procedures involved and the novel methodologies needed for 21st century classroom.
Actual classroom teaching is required based on the identified plan and the chosen
procedure to be used.

MSSSSTSST – Seminar on Social Sciences Topics for Social Studies Teachers
Immerses the social studies teachers to various social sciences and provides
basic consideration in the selection of topics fitted for social studies instruction.

MSSRDNGED – Readings in Global Education
Comprehensive presentation of readings on the reality of a global village where
factors and processes that bring changes operate in an interrelated and independent
system. It is offered to develop an enhanced awareness and exposure to various
perspectives of global issues.

MSSPRACTM – Practicum
A comprehensive product of knowledge gained from total exposure to several
courses foundation, specializations and electives) rigorously prepared for actual try-out.
A pilot school will be designed as laboratory school.

MSSPOLMOD – Politics of Modernization
A socio-anthro-psychological presentation of the broad implications of
technological change in the Third World. Focused on problems of change
implementation particularly its impact on politics and economy.

MSSDVPHNT – Development of Philippine Nationalism
Defines nationalism in its varied perspective and its manifestations among the
people’s achievement. The presentation will not only be based upon the “elitists”
perspective but likewise from the point of view of the majority of the people called “the
masses”. Provides options on the perpetuation of Filipinism and the role of the
classroom teacher in its development.

MSSENCUGE – Environmental and Cultural Geography
Analyze the impact of man on his environment and the various technologies
which man use that exploit the blue planet. The comfort man enjoys out of this
exploitation is focused but proper caution will be stressed to save the earth. Regional
presentation will be adopted for better appreciation.

MSSGPAPED – Geopolitical Aspects of Philippine Economic Development
An in-depth study of Philippine geography and politics that is brought into
consideration in order to gain clear ideas on the slow development of Philippine
economy. Ocular as well as documented explanations are regarded in the presentation
of the arguments on the dwindling Philippine economy. Historical approach will be used.

MSSECOSIS – Economics of Social Issues
Comprehensive analysis of the scarcity of resources vis-à-vis the unprecedented
growth in world population coupled with various social issues. Man’s responsibilities to
control his growing species is the basic issue in order to appreciate and resolve the
threatening social issues.

MSSINETEC – Internationalism and the Ethics of Economics
Analyzes the role of ethics and culture in the economy of the world. Multinational
Corporations, World Bank and International Monetary Fund will be focused, as well as its
role in the development of the Third World economy.

MSSINPORN – International Politics and the Relations of Nations
Focuses on the foreign policies and relations of the North-South Nations;
delineate the existing relationship between and among the First World Countries with the
Third World Countries. In-depth analysis of foreign policies of countries like USA,
Japan, Germany, Britain, China, OPEC countries are considered. Third World
conditions are focused particularly on poverty as a result of these policies.

MSSPPCUAS – Peoples and Cultures of Asia
A detailed study of the facets of geography, history, politics, and culture of Asia is
pursued and compared. In-depth treatment of these documents will be done to provide
accurate information about the continent. The focus is on the nations and people who
have adopted to their environment and prevailing technologies as products of their
history.

MBSTHESIS – Thesis Writing
Preparation of a master’s thesis on a particular field of specialization, application
of principles and procedures for scientific investigation utilization of adequate data;
presentation of oral defense.
