LABORATORY EXERCISE NO. 1
Patch Cable Making:
Our task in this laboratory exercise is to make a patch cable based on the TIA/EIA wiring standards
for RJ-45 data cable connector. The first configuration made was the standard straight through patch cable
(T-568B standard) that is commonly used to connect personal computers to a router for wired internet
connection. The second configuration that we made was a cross-over patch cable (T-568A standard on
one end and T-568B on the other) that is also used to connect two computers and can establish a direct
connection for easier file transfer without the use of any router or switch. Since these two types of patch
cable configurations are very popular and are also used in most of our common computer and internet
activities, the laboratory exercise itself taught us how to make one which will also come in handy
whenever we want to establish different kinds of networks and connections that will require skills in
making patch cables. The exercise itself also introduces the concept of standardization where certain rules
and standards are necessary to make the system more efficient and uniform in any level. It is also
important that the patch cable is properly crimped so that all the wires are fully functional, and all
connections are secure. In my extensive research, the consideration of what category of unshielded
twisted pair (UTP) cables used in making a patch cable are also important when establishing or designing
a network. Different categories are available which vary in bandwidth. This is important so that the cable
itself can be fully utilize and optimize its performance while minimizing the cost. The importance of this
activity cannot be overlooked for it offers basic knowledge on the physical aspect of computer networking.
The activity itself may be simple but it is still important to know the basics and standards of how things
are made.
