CHAPTER 1
INTRODUCTION
1.1. General
Concrete is the most widely used construction material in the world. There are
many construction projects, such as highway roads, bridges, dams, industrial zones,
tall buildings, universities, schools and hospitals, etc. Concrete has been one of the
most widely used building materials because of its compressive strength, resistance to
water, and its ability to be easily formed and placed according to need, many advanced
construction techniques and materials are required.
High performance concrete (HPC) is the name given to a class of materials that
exhibits properties superior to those of conventional concrete. These superiorities may
include easier placement and consolidation, high early strength, better long-term
mechanical properties, increased toughness, better volume stability and longer life in
severe environments.
High performance concrete allows for the design of taller structure, and in the
case of bridges longer, shallower, lighter beams and girders. The time and cost of
construction may be decreased by using HPC. High performance concrete can provide
increased durability, which effectively increases service life and reduce maintenance.
The use of HPC can be a step toward further improving the durability of our nation’s
bridges and structures. Effect of its high compressive strength, high performance
concrete can be used as thinner section and longer span than normal concrete.
In this study, the compressive strengths of HPC which is made up of available
materials in our country are compared with different mixture designs. However, as it is
a new material, the use of HPC has been limited to a few structural applications due
primarily to the special instructions of the material and the lack of established design
guidelines.
1.2. Objectives of the Study
The main objectives of this study are:
(a) To determine the physical properties of constituent materials such as
cement, fine aggregate, coarse aggregate and fly ash.
2
(b) To review the mix design and characterization of the behavior of high
performance concrete
(c) To evaluate the mix design for HPC according to ACI method
(d) To study the available strength of high performance concrete in Myanmar
(e) To get knowledge about developing in concrete technology
1.3. Scopes of the Study
The scopes of the study are described below.
(a) In this research work, Crown cement , coarse aggregate from Htone Pho,
sand from Ayeyarwaddy River, Class C fly ash from (Triple Dragon) and
superplasticizer (Sikament- 520) are used as constituent materials.
(b) The physical properties of Crown cement such as normal consistency,
setting times, specific gravity, fineness, soundness tests and compressive
strength tests are tested according to ASTM standard.
(c) Similarly, specific gravity, sieve analysis and water absorption tests are
tested for fine and coarse aggregates.
(d) Mix design of HPC is calculated step by step according to ACI method.
(e) Trial mixes are done by using w/c ratio of less than 0.3.
1.4. Outlines of the Study
There are five chapters in this study. The first chapter introduces the
objectives and scope of this study with general. Chapter two includes literature
review of high performance concrete. Materials and testing methods are
presented in chapter three. Chapter four is mixing procedure and test results
for high performance concrete. Finally, a summary of discussions, conclusion
and recommendations are presented in chapter five.
