Question 1:
Why do mobile phone manufacturers (Apple, Google, and BlackBerry)
want to track where their customers go?
Answer:
Collect this data for advertising and marketing purposes.
Gather their information to provide better services, identify poorly selling products and
following customers buying habits.
To improve location-based services for customers.
To distribute customer’s usage data for profit, even though these company deny that
they sell this information to third party companies.
Pinpointing when a unit is shipped, received, returned, and refurbished.
If our cell phone is lost, then the manufacturers can help us to track the location of our
cell phones.
Question 2:
Do you think mobile phone customers should be able to turn tracking off?
Should customers be informed when they are being tracked? Why or why
not?
Answer: By turning off the tracking capabilities, people may not get the opportunity to
receive coupons, Packages, Deals, Money-saving Offers and many more things. Their friends
and family members will not be able to where they are, where they go and join them for
dinner, for meeting etc. Many instantaneous opportunities will be lost by turning off tracking.
I think that the cell phone customers should be able to turn tracking off. They should also be
informed when they are being tracked. This is because if the systems of the smartphones
manufacturers do not have the action of that, they will violate their customers’ privacy for
certain scenarios.
If the user does not have awareness when he/she being tracked then users will hesitate to use
Smartphones with location based services. This may cause bad reputation of Smartphones
manufacturers and smartphones product itself. Also sales of Cell phone may decrease.
Moreover, allowing smartphones users to turn tracking off using their smartphones’ functions
also acts as a respect of the cell phone manufactures towards their customers. They can show
their respect to their customers by giving permission to their customers to choose to check in
their location areas or not through their phones’ location-based services.
Question 3:
Do you think mobile phone tracking is a violation of a person’s privacy?
Answer: Yes. Smartphones contain personal information, including banking information,
travel plans, business information ,family photos and many more things. However, use of
Security software is now common in our computers and cell phones but many of us doesn’t
pay attention to our safety and not protect personal information that is store in our phones etc
and transmitted through our cell phones.
While there is security software for smartphones including anti-virus and encryption
software, it is not available for all models of cell phones and has not been widely adopted.
Cell phone tracking is a violation of a person’s privacy. Cell phone tracking enables someone
to track other person location without the consent of that person. It will cause disturbance for
that person or cause many problem, such as the enemies of that person can track that person
location and plan to murder that person. Moreover, bank information or other private and
confidential information flow to other people means it violate a person’s life.

How does information technology affect socioeconomic disparities? Explain
your answer.
Answer: Information technology has huge impact on the socioeconomic disparities in the
early days. The technology analysts and sociologists stated there is a term called “digital
divide”, where more educated people take the advantage of the newer technologies than the
people from less-developed or less-fortunate socioeconomic groups. The digital divide
phenomenon has been decreased along the years as the internet access, personal computers
and the smart phones have become cheaper compared to the early days.
Now that users have adapted to information-technology and have learned to utilize the new
technology that is available to them more time is consumed on these media devices. Based on
studies, it shows that children of poor families are spending a great deal more time than
shorter for more well-off families using computers phones and television to consume media.
Question 5:
Why is access to technology insufficient to eliminate the digital divide?
Answer: In the early days, people who had money were able to access to the technology sooner
compared to those not able to afford it. But now, for those unable to afford in the past has grabbed
the chance to learn the latest technology when they have the ability.
Besides, it might be due to parental control is not equal because not everyone is concerned on the
issue of controlling the amount of time spend on the electronic devices for their children.
Moreover, it might be also due to not all schools are having the funds to buy and adapt the newest
technology and so there is some digital divide in the education field.
Question 6:
How serious a problem is the “ new” digital divide? Explain your answer.
Answer: The new digital divide is both a gift and a curse more so a curse than a gift
because now parents spend more time monitoring controlling the usage of technology it also
affects the health concerns that come up with the over usage of technology. With the usage
of the Internet smart phones and other modern technology the increased emphasis on visual
processing ability rather than critical thinking and information retention are affecting our
cognitive patterns.
Children spends most of their time in using mobile phones and playing games etc that not
only effect their mental health but also their physical health.
Question 7:
Why is the digital divide problem an ethical dilemma?
Answer:
The digital divide problem is an ethical dilemma because we know that the over usage of
technology can be very detrimental and has shown based on studies that if technology is not
properly used in moderation it affects the learning abilities of today's youth and increases the gap
of the digital divide.
