Architectural Structures Exam Paper 2013

This document is a 3 page exam for an Architectural Structures course. It contains 5 questions regarding structural design concepts: 1) Define 8 foundational and soil-related terms. 2) Discuss sheet structure joint methods and design a double cover butt joint connecting two steel sections. 3) Draw built-up column types and design welds connecting an angle section to a gusset plate. 4) Design a suitable section for a bridge truss diagonal carrying 200kN of tension. 5) Calculate the maximum force capacity of a tension member connected to a gusset plate via chain or zig-zag riveting.

(b) Two sections 10 mm and 18 mm thick are to be jointed 5. A 300 ISF 8 mm is used as Tension member in a lattice girder. It
by Double Cover butt joint. The joint is double rivetted by is connected to a 12 mm gusset plate by 18 mm hand driven
cover plates each 8 mm thick. The load to be transformed rivets. Calculate the maximum force that the member can
carry if :
by the joint is 500 kN. Design the joint
and rivets on packings. Rivets are power driven and (a) Chain revetting is done Fig. 2

fy = 250 MPa. (5) (b) Zig-zag rivetting is done Fig. 3 (10)
